Using Wispr Flow Discreetly: Microphone Guide

Last updated: April 23, 2026

Available on: Mac, Windows, iOS

Flow understands whispers perfectly. Get a microphone close to your mouth, and you can dictate quietly anywhere — no one will hear you. This guide helps you choose the right mic setup for discreet dictation.

What it is

Flow's speech recognition works just as well with whispered speech as normal speech. The key to discreet dictation is simple: the closer your mic is to your mouth, the quieter you can speak.

When to use it

Use discreet dictation when you want to:

  • Dictate in a shared office without disturbing coworkers

  • Use Flow in public spaces like coffee shops or airports

  • Keep your voice notes private in open environments

How it works in Flow

Overview

Flow introduces whispering during onboarding and provides tools to help you find the right microphone setup for quiet dictation. On iOS, you can also dictate notes discreetly using the built-in microphone button, lock screen widget, or a Siri voice command — without opening the app.

Key behaviors

Onboarding (Mac and Windows)

  • Work environment question: Flow asks whether you work around others, so it can tailor setup advice for shared office spaces.

  • AirPods warning: If you have AirPods connected during onboarding, Flow shows a warning recommending you switch to a different microphone for better dictation quality. Click Change microphone to select another option.

  • Change microphone button: A Change microphone button is available on the mic test screen for all users, regardless of whether AirPods are connected.

  • Social proof screen: Scrolling testimonials from Flow users show how naturally quiet dictation works in open offices. The page headline reads "You can whisper around other people."

  • Mic test tip card: A tip notes that a wired headset or desk microphone works well for whispering. This tip appears for users in the Microphone Quiz experiment. If AirPods are connected, the tip is replaced by the AirPods warning instead.

  • Try it yourself screen: The "Whisper a note" tab lets you try whispering during onboarding to see that Flow works with quiet speech.

Note: The mic test tip card, work environment question, and social proof screen appear only for users in the Microphone Quiz experiment. The Change microphone button and AirPods warning appear for all users.

iOS dictation

  • In-app dictation: The iOS note editor includes a built-in microphone button with a waveform visualization. Tap it to dictate directly into a note — text is inserted at your cursor position. The waveform responds to your voice volume in real time. While recording, Cancel (✕) and Done (✓) buttons appear alongside the waveform. Tap Done to finish — a spinner appears while your speech is being transcribed.

  • Lock screen widget: A circular lock screen widget lets you tap to open a new note with dictation ready to go — useful for quickly capturing a quiet thought without unlocking to the home screen.

  • "Take Flow note" Siri shortcut: Say "Take Flow note" (or "Dictate with Flow") to Siri to start hands-free audio dictation without opening the app. A Live Activity appears on your lock screen and Dynamic Island with a Save Note button — tap it to stop recording and save. If Siri activates during a dictation session, the Dynamic Island indicator stays visible and your session resumes automatically once Siri closes. A separate "Save Flow note" (or "Quick Flow note") shortcut also exists for creating text-based notes.

Note: Flow registers additional Siri shortcuts: "Quick dictation to clipboard", "Quick dictate to notes with Flow" (or "Save note with Flow"), "Turn on/off Flow", and "Open Flow notes". These shortcuts are automatically available after installing Flow — no manual configuration is needed.

Personalized recommendations

Not sure which microphone is right for you? Take the Microphone Quiz in the Hub to get personalized recommendations optimized for whispering. After completing onboarding, look for the "Using Flow around other people?" card in the Hub and click Improve my set up.

The quiz considers your work environment, whether you work at a fixed desk or move between locations, and what equipment you already own. Based on your answers, Flow will either confirm your current setup is great, acknowledge your current equipment while recommending upgrades, or recommend new microphones with links to Amazon. Click Email my results to send your recommendations to yourself.

Note: The Microphone Quiz is being rolled out gradually. If you don't see the quiz card in the Hub, it may not yet be available for your account. If you already answered the work environment question during onboarding, the quiz skips that step and starts at the whisper education stage.

Choosing your setup

Your ideal mic depends on where and how you work. Use an external microphone if you work around others — your laptop's built-in mic works, but you'll need to lean in close.

Important: The built-in Mac microphone cannot be used when your laptop lid is closed (clamshell mode) — an external microphone is required for that setup.

Recommended microphones

Shure MV7+ (Podcast Mic) — Best option

  • Professional-grade quality

  • Built to last

  • Superior close-range capture

Boya Gooseneck (Gooseneck Mic) — Runner up

  • Mounts to your desk, stays positioned

  • Perfect for whispering at a fixed workspace

  • Affordable with excellent audio quality

DJI Mic (Lav Mic) — Another option

  • Pocket-sized, clips to clothing

  • Works anywhere: desk, coffee shop, travel

  • Excellent whisper capture

Note: If you already own a headset with a built-in mic, the quiz may confirm it as adequate equipment for whispering.

Best for whispering: Wired headset

Wired headsets with built-in microphones are particularly effective for whispering. The mic stays consistently close to your mouth, and wired connections provide reliable audio quality for quiet speech. This is the setup recommended during onboarding for users dictating in shared office spaces.

Best practices

  • Position close: The closer the mic, the quieter you can speak.

  • Practice whispering: It feels unusual at first but works well.

  • Stay consistent: Use the same mic regularly for best results.

  • Check settings: Confirm Flow is using your external mic, not your laptop's built-in mic.

  • Use Siri on iOS: Say "Take Flow note" or "Dictate with Flow" to start hands-free audio dictation without taking your phone out of your pocket.

Examples

Whispering a quick note in an open office

Setup: Wired headset at your desk

You whisper: "Remind me to follow up with Sarah about the Q3 budget review"

Flow types: Remind me to follow up with Sarah about the Q3 budget review

Your coworkers won't hear a thing — the mic picks up your whisper clearly because it's right next to your mouth.

Capturing a thought on the go with Siri (iOS)

Setup: iPhone with AirPods or wired earbuds

You say: "Hey Siri, Take Flow note" (or "Hey Siri, Dictate with Flow")

Result: Siri starts audio dictation via Live Activity — your note is recorded and saved without opening the app. A Save Note button appears on your lock screen and Dynamic Island so you can stop and save at any time.

FAQs

I already have a mic — will it work?

Any microphone that positions near your mouth works great with Flow. Test what you have first — or take the Microphone Quiz in the Hub to see if your current equipment is optimized for whispering.

Can I use my laptop's built-in mic for whispering?

Yes, but you'll need to lean in close to the laptop. For true whisper-level dictation, an external mic positioned near your mouth works much better.

Can I dictate with my Mac lid closed?

Yes, but only with an external microphone selected. The built-in Mac microphone does not capture audio when the lid is closed. If you try to start dictation in clamshell mode with the built-in mic selected, Flow shows a warning and prompts you to switch to a different microphone.

What about AirPods?

AirPods are not recommended as a dictation microphone. During onboarding, Flow shows a warning suggesting you switch to a different mic. In Settings → General → Microphone, AirPods are flagged with a ⚠️ warning noting they may be slow to start and have more dictation errors. The ⚠️ warning appears when AirPods are listed but not the system default. If AirPods are your default input device, the dialog shows "Overrides other mics when connected" instead. A wired headset or desk mic gives better results for quiet dictation.

How do I dictate a note discreetly on iOS without opening the app?

Say "Hey Siri, Take Flow note" or "Dictate with Flow" to start hands-free audio dictation. A Live Activity appears on your lock screen and Dynamic Island with a Save Note button — tap it to stop recording and save. You can also tap the lock screen widget to open a new note with dictation ready to start.

Will Siri or a phone call interrupt my dictation session on iOS?

No. If Siri activates or a phone call comes in while you're dictating, the Dynamic Island indicator stays visible and your session resumes automatically once the interruption ends.

Limitations and notes

  • Discreet dictation is available on Mac, Windows, and iOS.

  • The built-in Mac microphone is unavailable in clamshell mode — an external mic is required.

  • Clamshell mode detection requires macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. On macOS 11 (Big Sur) or earlier, clamshell mode is not detected — the warning about the built-in mic being unavailable will not appear even if the lid is closed.

  • Onboarding whisper features and the Microphone Quiz are part of a gradual rollout and may not appear for all users.

  • The lock screen widget, Control Center toggle, Control Center button, and Siri shortcuts are available on iOS only.

  • Siri shortcuts are automatically available after installing Flow — no manual configuration in the Shortcuts app is needed.

  • The Dynamic Island live activity persisting through audio interruptions (such as Siri activation or incoming calls) is being rolled out gradually and may not yet be available for all accounts.
