Use Flow with multiple languages

Flow dictates in 100+ languages. Select the languages you speak to switch between them across dictations, or choose a regional variant for your preferred spelling.

Choose languages and variants

Flow detects one language per dictation, not per word. Selecting languages narrows what Flow can choose from; selecting just one tells Flow to use that language. Auto-detect on Mac, Windows, and iOS lets Flow choose from all supported languages, subject to the recognition limits below.

On Mac and Windows, dictation uses your full saved selection; change your selection in Settings. A selected variant affects spelling or script only when the dictation is in the corresponding language.

Uses “ss” instead of ß (“Straße” → “Strasse”); standard German keeps ß.

Chinese - Simplified / Chinese - Traditional

Chinese dictation uses Simplified characters unless Chinese - Traditional is selected.

Cantonese (粵語)

A separate option you can select alongside either Chinese variant.

Hinglish

Writes Hindi in Latin letters and formats English normally.

French

Uses French punctuation spacing, with the exceptions below.

Select Hinglish explicitly for mixed Hindi-English dictation: Flow does not detect it automatically, and selecting Hindi plus English does not request Latin-script Hindi.

Choosing another option within these groups replaces your previous choice: English / English - British / English - Canadian; Hindi / Hinglish; Chinese - Traditional / Chinese - Simplified; German / German - Swiss.

French punctuation spacing

Adds narrow no-break spaces before ; : ? ! » and after «, except in developer or coding apps. A colon between digits (12:30, 1:1) or inside “://” is left unchanged.

Consecutive marks (?!, ??, !!) get one narrow no-break space before the group. Existing correct spacing stays unchanged.

Languages that need an explicit selection

Flow can identify these 23 languages from speech: Arabic, Cantonese, Chinese (Simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. Regional variants use the corresponding language. Other selectable languages—including Urdu, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Macedonian, Malay, Persian, Romanian, Catalan, Norwegian, Tamil and Bengali—cannot be identified from speech alone, so select them explicitly.

Important: Select only one language that Flow cannot recognize from speech at a time. With two selected together, Flow may transcribe the wrong language.

With exactly one such language selected, Flow can fall back to it when speech does not match another selection—for example, Urdu with English selected. This fallback is not available for every language and is not guaranteed; Flow can use automatic detection instead.

For harder-to-recognize languages such as Czech, Hungarian, Thai, Arabic and Greek, selecting the language keeps the output in it when your speech clearly matches, instead of coming out in a close neighbouring language or script. These dictations can take about a second longer to appear.

If your selection also includes a language Flow cannot tell apart from the one you spoke—Slovak alongside Czech, or Malay alongside Indonesian, for example—Flow keeps choosing between them so either can still be recognized. Selections that use Auto-detect, and dictations with no language selected, are unaffected.

Two pairs receive an additional language check, and remain supported because Hindi and Russian can be identified from speech:

  • Hindi with Urdu: when Flow hears Hindi, it checks the language so Urdu speech comes out in Urdu. Hinglish counts as Hindi for this check.

  • Russian with Ukrainian: when Flow hears Russian, it checks the language so Ukrainian speech comes out in Ukrainian and genuine Russian speech stays Russian.

How to set your languages

On Mac, Windows, and iOS, saved changes apply to your next dictation without restarting, not to one already underway.

Mac and Windows

Select at least one language or Auto-detect; otherwise saving shows “Please select at least one language or turn on auto-detect”. There is no selection limit, but variants within a group still replace each other.

  1. Open Settings → General in Wispr Flow, or ? (Help) → Languages.

  2. Click Change beside Languages to open My languages.

  3. Turn Auto-detect on, or off to select individual languages.

  4. Select your languages if Auto-detect is off; remove one with the X beside it in Selected.

  5. Click Save and close to apply your choices; changes are not saved before this click.

Turning Auto-detect on clears the individual choices and disables language selection. Turning it back off before closing restores the choices you had when you turned it on; if there were none, choose a language before saving.

Search for any languages matches English names, native names and aliases, ignoring capitalization: “hindi” or “हिन्दी” finds Hindi; “hindi”, “hinglish” or “romanized” finds Hinglish.

Desktop choices follow your account and survive restarts. Opening Settings refreshes them from your account, including changes made on another device; an account with no selected languages uses Auto-detect.

iOS

Each tap saves immediately; there is no save step.

  1. Open Settings in Wispr Flow.

  2. Tap Set language under general.

  3. Select your languages or Auto-detect; use search to filter by displayed name.

  4. Close the language sheet.

Choosing Auto-detect replaces your selections; choosing a language removes Auto-detect. Removing every language restores Auto-detect. Flow keeps the order in which you choose languages.

Android

Android has no Auto-detect entry. With nothing selected, Languages shows “No languages selected. Tap Add more to get started.” and Save stays disabled until you select a language.

Warning: Leaving Languages without tapping Save discards your edits; returning reloads your saved selection.

  1. Open Settings in Wispr Flow.

  2. Tap Languages.

  3. Tap Add more to open Select languages.

  4. Select your languages; Search languages filters by displayed name.

  5. Tap Done to return to Languages; this does not save.

  6. Tap Save to apply your choices to later dictations and return to Settings.

To remove a language, tap it on Languages, then tap Save. Back from Select languages returns to Languages; a second Back leaves without saving. Android does not preserve your selection order.

If Flow uses the wrong language

  1. Select only the intended language using the steps above, instead of Auto-detect on desktop or iOS.

  2. Start a new dictation in that language.

If the output language is correct, continue dictating; otherwise see Flow is transcribing in the wrong language.

Note: On Mac and Windows, a “Speaking a different language?” notice can appear after a dictation when your speech differs from your selection. Choose Open language settings to adjust your selection; the notice does not name a detected language.

  • A new dictation still uses the wrong language after you select only the intended language.
