How to Use Auto Cleanup (Beta)
Last updated: May 28, 2026
Available on: Mac and Windows. Mobile coming soon.
Auto Cleanup is the AI editing layer that quietly polishes your dictation as you speak. It removes filler words, tightens phrasing, and reshapes sentences for clarity, so what you say sounds the way you would have written it if you had time to edit.
Auto Cleanup replaces the older Smart Formatting toggle on desktop with four selectable cleanup levels.
Where to find it
Open Wispr Flow.
Go to Settings → Personalization → Style.
Select the Auto Cleanup (Beta) tab.
Pick your Cleanup Level.
Cleanup levels
Level |
What it does |
None |
Raw transcription. Disables Smart Formatting entirely. |
Light |
Cleans up filler words and grammar. |
Medium (Default) |
Edits for clarity and conciseness. |
High |
Rewrites for brevity and polish. |
Medium is the default for new users. The level applies globally to every dictation, in every app. There is no per-app or per-dictation level setting.
Reviewing edits
After a longer dictation at Medium or High, Flow briefly shows a Cleaned up! See what's changed notification. Click it to see what Auto Cleanup changed.
Press Opt+O (Mac) or Win+Alt+O (Windows) at any time to open the diff for your last cleanup. Press it again to close.
If you want the original back, use Undo AI edit from the Home tab.
Note: The change notification only appears at Medium or High, only on longer dictations, and never inside AI apps. There is a lifetime display cap of 5 notifications so it does not become noisy.
Auto Cleanup vs. Smart Formatting
Auto Cleanup replaces the Smart Formatting toggle on desktop. Your previous setting is migrated automatically:
Smart Formatting ON → Auto Cleanup set to Light
Smart Formatting OFF → Auto Cleanup set to None
Backtrack (self-correction with phrases like "scratch that" or "actually") still works at every level except None.
Auto Cleanup and Transforms
Auto Cleanup and Transforms are mutually exclusive. When Transforms is active on your account, Auto Cleanup is suppressed.
FAQs
Can I turn Auto Cleanup off completely?
Yes. Set the Cleanup Level to None. This also disables Smart Formatting and gives you raw transcription.
Is Auto Cleanup available on iOS or Android?
Not yet. Auto Cleanup is currently Mac and Windows only. Mobile is on the roadmap.
Does Auto Cleanup work in all languages?
Auto Cleanup runs in every language Flow supports, but it is optimized for English. Non-English languages are processed through a generic cleanup prompt and may behave less consistently than English.
Does the Cleanup Level sync across my devices?
On desktop, the Cleanup Level is stored locally per device. Set it on each Mac or Windows machine where you use Flow.
Why didn't I see a "Cleaned up!" notification?
The notification only appears at Medium or High, only on longer dictations, never in AI apps, and there is a lifetime display cap of 5 so it does not show up forever. You can still press Opt+O (Mac) or Win+Alt+O (Windows) any time to see the last cleanup diff.
