Why Flow capitalizes words mid-sentence, and how to control it

Dictating into the middle of a sentence and getting a capital letter where you wanted lowercase? Or a period you didn't ask for? Here's why it happens and how to dial the formatting back — about a minute in settings.
Quick checks
Is the first word a name? Flow keeps the capital when your dictation starts with your first or last name, a dictionary entry, or a name visible on screen.
Are you in a document editor? Some editors share less of the text around your cursor, so Flow treats your dictation as a new sentence.
Does it happen in a plain text field too? Dictate mid-sentence in a simple text box, such as a browser search bar. If casing is correct there, the issue is app-specific; if it happens there too, continue with the steps below.
What should happen
Flow reads the text near your cursor and adjusts casing, spacing, and punctuation so your dictation joins the surrounding sentence cleanly.
When you continue mid-sentence, Flow lowercases the first letter and adds leading or trailing spaces as needed. It keeps the capital in one case: when your dictation starts with a proper noun.
How to reduce unwanted capitalization
The most effective control is your Auto Cleanup level, which sets how much Flow rewrites your dictation.
Open the Wispr Flow hub by clicking the Flow icon in your menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows).
Select Personalization in the left sidebar.
Open the Style section, then the Auto Cleanup (Beta) tab.
Change the Cleanup Level from Medium to Light or None.
Dictate a few words into the middle of an existing sentence. If the first word stays lowercase, you're done.
Note: The Cleanup Level is stored locally on each device. If you dictate from more than one computer, set it on each one.

Important: Backtrack, which lets you correct yourself out loud mid-dictation, works at every level except None. Choose Light if you want to keep spoken self-corrections.
Check your trailing punctuation setting
Your writing style also affects what Flow does to punctuation at the end of a mid-sentence insertion. Formal always keeps trailing periods. Casual strips them on shorter dictations, and Very Casual strips them regardless of length.
During a mid-sentence continuation, trailing exclamation marks and question marks may be removed as well. Flow skips stripping entirely if the line already ends in punctuation or if you have text selected.
FAQs
Do I need to turn anything on for mid-sentence blending to work?
It relies on Context Awareness, which is on by default on Mac and Windows. On Mac, Flow also needs Accessibility permission granted in System Settings. Check the toggle under Settings → Data and Privacy. If your organization has disabled Context Awareness, the toggle is off and locked.
Can I see what Flow changed?
Yes. Press Opt+O on Mac or Win+Alt+O on Windows to view the most recent cleanup as a diff, then press it again to close. The desktop Home tab also has an Undo AI edit option to recover your original dictation.
Why can't I find the Auto Cleanup tab?
Auto Cleanup is hidden while Transforms is active, because the two features are mutually exclusive. Auto Cleanup is also Mac and Windows only.
Limitations and notes
Auto Cleanup is available on Mac and Windows. On iOS, use the Smart Formatting toggle in Settings → Personalization. On Android, Smart Formatting is always on and has no toggle.
There is no separate Smart Formatting toggle on desktop. Setting the Cleanup Level to None is how you turn it off.
Auto Cleanup runs in every language Flow supports, but it is optimized for English.
Context-aware formatting does not run inside remote desktop sessions such as Citrix, RDP, or VMware. Dictation pastes with default formatting there.
On Windows, context-aware formatting is skipped when you dictate inside the Wispr Flow app window itself.
There is no per-app or per-dictation Cleanup Level. The setting applies globally on that device.
