Weekly word limit on Android: warnings, blocked presses, and upgrading
Last updated: September 12, 2026
Available on: Android (Free plan)
On the Free plan, Flow counts the words you dictate each week. As you near the cap, Flow alerts you before your next dictation starts, so a dictation in progress is never cut short.
How the weekly word limit works
Three usage thresholds trigger different alerts. Each alert appears at most once per week and re-arms after the weekly reset. Alerts also clear when you upgrade to Pro or sign out.
Words used |
Words remaining |
What happens |
800–999 |
200 or fewer |
One "approaching your limit" alert that week. Next press dictates normally. |
1,000–1,499 |
0 (soft limit) |
One "limit reached" alert that week. Next press dictates normally. |
1,500+ |
0 (hard limit) |
Every bubble press is blocked. |
How the soft and hard limits differ
At the soft limit you keep dictating after the one weekly alert. At the hard limit every bubble press is blocked until the weekly reset, which restores dictation automatically, or until you upgrade to Pro, which clears the block immediately.
How alerts are delivered
Alerts fire only when you press the Flow bubble, never during or immediately after a dictation. Depending on your notification settings, the alert appears one of two ways:
Heads-up banner: Tap it, or its Get unlimited words action, to open the Plan page with the upgrade paywall.
Bottom sheet: If notifications are off or silenced, a sheet slides up over whichever app you're in. Tap its call-to-action to open the Plan page.
Flow re-checks your plan before opening the paywall. If the check fails, you'll see "Couldn't verify your plan. Try again." If you already upgraded elsewhere, you'll see "Your plan is up to date." and the paywall won't open.
Where you can see your usage
Navigation drawer: A progress bar shows words used. At the limit it turns red and shows "No words remaining." with an "Upgrade now ›" link.
Home word-limit card: The first card in the action-card area on your home screen, with a usage bar and a Get unlimited words button that opens the Plan page. The soft-limit card can be dismissed with the X; the hard-cap card cannot, and appears even if you dismissed the soft-limit card.
Notifications and home cards clear automatically after the weekly reset, after upgrading to Pro, or after signing out.
FAQs
Will I lose a dictation if I hit the limit mid-sentence?
No. Any dictation that starts completes and inserts in full, because limit checks happen only on a bubble press.
I'm being alerted but I don't think I've used that many words. Why?
Words are counted once per completed dictation session. Check the navigation drawer progress bar for your exact total.
Will the limit block me during onboarding?
No. Onboarding users can always complete their first dictation regardless of usage.
Can I turn off the word-limit notifications?
No. With notifications off or silenced, Flow shows the alert as a bottom sheet over your current app instead.
I saw "Your plan is up to date." — what does that mean?
Your account is already on a paid plan, for example through the desktop app or your organization, so Flow skips the paywall. No action is needed.
I see "Couldn't verify your plan. Try again." — what should I do?
Check your internet connection and tap the alert again to retry.
How do I remove the limit?
Upgrade to Pro from the Plan page, reachable from any limit alert or the navigation drawer. Upgrading clears the block immediately across the entire app.
Limitations and notes
The weekly word limit applies to Free accounts only. Pro accounts have no word cap.
Limit checks happen only at the moment you press the bubble — a dictation already in progress is never interrupted.
Plan changes made on another platform, such as upgrading or cancelling on desktop, apply on Android shortly after your next dictation.
When a Google Play subscription expires or is cancelled, the app returns to the Free experience — usage bar, word-limit alerts, and upgrade prompt — shortly after you return to the app or open the Plan page. No restart needed.
This behavior is Android only. iOS has its own word-limit enforcement.
Enterprise accounts do not use the word-limit system described here — contact your admin for plan details.
