Using Wispr Flow on Android Work Profiles

Available on: Android 13 and above

If the accessibility toggle for Wispr Flow is grayed out, missing, or blocked on your work phone, this guide walks you through enabling it. Most users get this working in under 3 minutes.

Quick checks

  • Have you granted overlay permission? Wispr Flow asks for "Display over other apps" permission first — accessibility comes second.

  • Is the toggle grayed out or missing entirely? Your organization's security policy is blocking restricted settings. Install Wispr Flow on a personal device, or ask your IT administrator to allow accessibility services for Wispr Flow.

  • Is this a work-managed device? If your organization controls this phone via MDM, Android system policies may block accessibility services entirely. If accessibility is blocked at the policy level, the steps below will not work — check with your IT administrator before proceeding.

How to enable accessibility permissions

The first two steps are the same on every device:

  1. Open Wispr Flow and follow the onboarding flow, or go to Settings if you've already completed onboarding.

  2. Read the legal consent screen and tap Agree. A floating video guide appears to walk you through the remaining steps.

Note: On devices without picture-in-picture support, the floating video guide does not appear. You'll be taken directly to Accessibility Settings — refer to the device-specific steps below for what to enable.

Once you reach Accessibility Settings, follow the steps for your device. The accessibility service entry may be labeled Effortless voice dictation under Wispr Flow on some devices. The floating guide dismisses automatically once the permission is granted, and the app returns you to setup.

Samsung

In Accessibility Settings:

  1. Find "Installed apps" in the list, then tap Wispr Flow.

  2. Turn on the accessibility service toggle. The toggle should now show as enabled, and Wispr Flow will return you to setup.

Xiaomi (including Redmi and Poco)

In Accessibility Settings:

  1. Find "Downloaded apps" in the list, then tap Wispr Flow.

  2. Turn on the accessibility service toggle.

  3. Tap OK on the additional confirmation dialog that appears. Wispr Flow will then return you to setup.

Vivo and Motorola

In Accessibility Settings:

  1. Find Wispr Flow directly in the list.

  2. Turn on the accessibility service toggle. Wispr Flow will return you to setup.

Google Pixel, OnePlus, and other devices

In Accessibility Settings:

  1. Find "Downloaded apps" in the list, then tap Wispr Flow.

  2. Turn on the accessibility service toggle. Wispr Flow will return you to setup.

Warning: Keep the "Wispr Flow shortcut" toggle off. The shortcut is not required and can cause issues if enabled accidentally.

Note: Automatic return to Wispr Flow after granting permission times out after 5 minutes. If you take longer, reopen Wispr Flow manually.

Fixing the accessibility shortcut error

If the Wispr Flow shortcut is accidentally enabled, you'll see an "Oops, something isn't right" message during the permission setup flow.

  1. Tap "Open settings" to go to Accessibility Settings.

  2. Find the Wispr Flow shortcut toggle and turn it off.

  3. Enable the main accessibility service toggle. The app automatically returns to setup once the correct permission is detected.

Common issues

The Flow bubble shows a warning triangle or pulsing loader after permission was granted

This was caused by the accessibility service being silently dropped after a force-stop, system restart, or Android revoking the permission. Fixed in v1.9.8: Wispr Flow now recovers its accessibility service automatically, and shows a Repair prompt on the bubble to guide you when it can't recover on its own.

Two bubble states indicate what's happening:

  • Pulsing loader: Flow detected the issue and is trying to restore the accessibility service automatically. The bubble is temporarily not tappable. If successful, normal dictation resumes on its own.

  • Warning triangle: Automatic recovery did not succeed, or accessibility permission was revoked. Tap the triangle to go directly to the accessibility permission screen and re-enable Flow.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to v1.9.8 or later.

  2. Wait a moment if you see the pulsing loader — Flow is attempting to reconnect on its own.

  3. Tap the warning triangle if it appears, then re-enable the accessibility toggle on the screen that opens.

Snooze card stays stuck after force-stop, or shake-to-unsnooze stops working

This was caused by the snooze card not clearing after a force-stop or process teardown. Fixed in v1.9.8. Shake-to-unsnooze, which had also stopped working, is restored in this update.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to v1.9.8 or later.

  2. Restart Flow if the snooze card is still stuck after updating.

The bubble doesn't shrink on search fields, or shifts out of position in landscape mode

Two separate bubble display issues were fixed in v1.9.8: the bubble was not shrinking correctly when tapping into a search field, and rotating to landscape mode could leave the bubble in the wrong position on screen.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to v1.9.8 or later. Both issues resolve automatically after updating.

Flow doesn't start automatically after rebooting my phone

This was caused by Wispr Flow not auto-starting on boot. Fixed in v1.9.8: Wispr Flow now starts automatically when your phone boots, as long as accessibility permission is enabled.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to v1.9.8 or later.

  2. Verify that accessibility permission is enabled and battery optimization is disabled for Wispr Flow.

  3. Reboot your phone. Flow should start automatically.

Note: On aggressive OEM devices (Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and some Samsung models), the OS may never re-bind the accessibility framework after boot. If that happens, the bubble won't appear until you open Flow manually once. Enabling autostart and whitelisting Flow per the device-specific battery steps helps avoid this.

Dictated text wasn't inserted correctly in WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Signal, Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Discord

Dictated text could fail to appear in these chat apps, or Wispr Flow could fall back to the clipboard or show an insertion error even when the text was inserted correctly. Fixed in v2.0.0: text insertion in these apps now works reliably, eliminating spurious errors and unwanted clipboard usage.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to v2.0.0 or later. Text insertion in these apps now works correctly after updating.

Wispr Flow kept crashing after revoking microphone permission

This was caused by Wispr Flow being unable to handle a microphone permission that was revoked at the exact moment the app was starting up, which could cause the floating bubble and accessibility features to stop entirely. Fixed in the latest version: Wispr Flow now keeps the floating bubble visible and accessible even if microphone permission is revoked mid-start, so you can re-grant permission without losing the overlay.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to the latest version.

  2. Tap the floating bubble to open the permission re-grant screen.

  3. Grant microphone access. Recording capability is restored; tap the bubble to start a new dictation session.

The Flow bubble disappears and doesn't come back

This was caused by Android shutting down Wispr Flow in the background due to battery management, low memory, or a crash. Fixed in version 1.8.4: bringing Wispr Flow to the foreground now automatically restarts the floating bubble service, as long as you are still signed in and accessibility permission is still granted.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to version 1.8.4 or later.

  2. Open Wispr Flow to bring it to the foreground. The bubble reappears.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompt to re-grant accessibility permission if asked.

After re-granting permissions, Flow left me in Android Settings instead of returning to the app

This was caused by Wispr Flow not automatically returning to the foreground after a home-screen error card prompted you to re-grant the "Display over other apps" (overlay) permission. Fixed in the latest version: Wispr Flow now returns to the foreground as soon as the overlay permission is granted.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to the latest version.

  2. Tap the overlay error card on the home screen and re-grant the requested permission. Wispr Flow opens automatically when done.

Note: Auto-return currently applies to the overlay permission error card only. If you re-grant accessibility permission via its error card, you'll still need to reopen Wispr Flow manually.

Accessibility permission gets revoked when switching between work and personal profiles

This was caused by the app misidentifying why the accessibility service stopped and failing to resume correctly. Fixed in version 1.6.7.

  1. Update Wispr Flow to version 1.6.7 or later.

  2. Re-enable the accessibility toggle using the steps above if you still see permission prompts.

FAQs

Why does Wispr Flow need accessibility permissions?

Wispr Flow uses accessibility permissions to detect which app you're typing in and insert transcribed text. A legal consent screen explains exactly what data Wispr Flow accesses before you enable the permission.

What is the floating guide that appears when I open Accessibility Settings?

A small floating video loops through the steps to help you find and enable the correct toggle. It plays without sound and dismisses on its own once you grant the permission. Pressing the back button while the guide is expanded minimizes it rather than closing it, so you can follow along without losing your place.

What is the Repair prompt and when does it appear?

The Repair prompt appears on the Flow bubble — as either a pulsing loader or a warning triangle — when Wispr Flow detects that its accessibility service has stopped or needs to be re-enabled. Wispr Flow attempts automatic recovery first; the warning triangle only appears if that recovery fails or the permission has been revoked. Tapping the warning triangle takes you directly to the accessibility permission screen. The prompt cannot be dismissed by shaking your phone or switching apps.

Is my sensitive data safe?

Wispr Flow automatically hides the dictation bubble and skips text insertion for password fields, phone number inputs, numeric-only fields, and web password fields. It also avoids most credit card fields, and the floating bubble is automatically hidden in recognized banking and financial apps.

The bubble remains available in browser URL/address bars and in system notification inline-reply boxes, even when those fields use sensitive input types.

You can enable Privacy Mode by going to Settings → Data & Privacy → Privacy mode. When enabled, data is kept only on your device. If your account is part of an enterprise organization, Privacy Mode is automatically enabled during onboarding.

Why do I see a persistent notification from Wispr Flow?

When Wispr Flow is running, you may see a system "display over other apps" notification in your notification tray. This is a standard Android notification shown by the operating system whenever an app has permission to display over other apps — it cannot be removed.

What if Wispr Flow stops working when I switch apps?

Disable battery optimization for Wispr Flow. The app guides you through this during setup for Samsung, Xiaomi (including Redmi and Poco), OnePlus, Vivo, Motorola (including Lenovo), Huawei/Honor, Oppo, Realme, and Transsion (Tecno/Infinix/itel) devices. Google Pixel devices generally don't require this extra step.

Is enterprise or work profile support coming?

Full enterprise management and work profile deployment features are not currently available on Android, though SSO/SAML authentication is supported. For enterprise deployment with MDM tools (Jamf Pro, Kandji, Intune, etc.), Wispr Flow currently supports macOS and Windows. Contact support to discuss your team's needs.
