Android Download & Installation Guide
Last updated: June 14, 2026
Available on: Android (Beta)
New to Wispr Flow on Android? This guide walks you through downloading from the Play Store, granting the permissions Flow needs, and finishing setup so you can start dictating in any app. Most people finish in under 3 minutes.
How to install Wispr Flow
Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
Search for "Wispr Flow" in the search bar.
Tap the Wispr Flow app in the results. Look for the Wispr logo and "Wispr Inc" as the developer.
Tap Install and wait for the download to complete.
Open Wispr Flow from the Play Store, or tap the Wispr Flow icon on your home screen.
Note: If you tap a Wispr Flow link (such as a Dictionary link) and have the app installed, it opens directly to the right place. If not, install the app from the Play Store first.
How to complete setup
Review the three intro screens explaining what Wispr Flow does, how the Flow Bubble works, and how dictation works. Tap Next, then Give it a try! to proceed.
Sign in using Google, Apple, Microsoft, SSO, or email and password. If you already have an account, use the same sign-in method you used on other devices. To sign in with SSO, choose Continue with your SSO provider on the auth screen. Note that email aliases containing "+" are not supported.
Follow the onboarding flow, which includes language setup and two short dictation tutorials: a tap-to-dictate exercise and a press-and-hold (Push-to-Talk) exercise.
Grant the overlay permission when prompted. Tap Open Settings — you'll be taken to Android system Settings. Enable Display over other apps for Wispr Flow there. Flow brings itself back to the foreground automatically once the permission is granted.
Grant the accessibility permission when prompted. Review the explanation screens — including the "Don't turn the shortcut on!" warning — and tap Agree. The instruction steps animate sequentially; tap anywhere on the screen to advance faster. The accessibility consent screen also has a Not now option that exits without granting permission. Where you find Wispr Flow in accessibility settings depends on your device:
Samsung
Look under Installed apps.
Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO
Tap OK when prompted to confirm the permission. This extra step appears on Xiaomi-made devices (including most Redmi and POCO models).
Vivo, Motorola
Look for Wispr Flow directly in the list.
All other devices (Pixel, OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, Lenovo, Honor, etc.)
Look under Downloaded apps.
Configure privacy preferences when the "Your data is safe" screen appears. Choose your preferred option, then tap Next.
Grant the battery optimization exemption when prompted so Flow can run in the background. On most devices tap Allow; on Xiaomi devices tap Open settings and choose No restrictions. You can tap Skip on any device to bypass this step, though Flow may be killed more often by the system.
Allow or skip notifications when the "Don't speak into the void" screen appears. Allowing notifications enables Flow to send you helpful reminders and updates about your account.
Tap Finish on the completion screen. The Flow Bubble appears when you tap into a text field in any app.
Warning: Only enable the main Wispr Flow accessibility service. Do not turn on the shortcut — this causes an error. If you accidentally enable the shortcut, an "Oops, something isn't right" screen appears with a button to reopen settings.
Note: If you re-grant a permission later from a Home-screen error card and Flow doesn't return you to the app, tap Open Settings again to restart.
Navigating the app
After setup, you land on the Dashboard. The bottom navigation bar has four tabs:
Home: Your dictation transcript history, grouped by date. Tap a successful transcript's text to copy it, or use the Copy and Report buttons; Retry and Delete are in the kebab menu (deleting requires confirmation). The Home tab also shows dictation stats, permission banners, snooze and "Flow Bubble Disabled" warnings, a Style Personalization card, and education cards.
Dictionary: Manage custom words to improve transcription accuracy. Supports search, filter chips (All / Personal / Shared with Team for team users), adding entries via the floating "+" button, and swipe-to-edit and swipe-to-delete with confirmation. Changes sync each time you visit the tab.
Style: Personalize how Flow formats your dictations across four contexts: Personal messaging, Work messaging, Email, and Other. Personal messaging offers Formal, Casual, and Very Casual. Work, Email, and Other offer Formal, Casual, and Excited. Each category has a default — Personal defaults to Casual; Work, Email, and Other default to Formal. A persistent banner at the bottom of the Style tab reminds you that styles only apply when dictating in English. Until you complete style personalization (a one-time onboarding flow accessible via a Make Flow sound like you card), your category choices are not applied during dictation.
Snippets: Create and manage text expansion shortcuts to quickly insert phrases you type often. Supports search, filter chips, the floating "+" button, and swipe-to-edit and swipe-to-delete with confirmation. Changes sync each time you visit the tab.
Tap the menu icon in the top corner to open the side navigation drawer. A profile card at the top of the drawer shows your avatar, name, email, and plan — tap it to open the Account screen. The drawer entries are split into a Support group (Report an issue, Share feedback) and a General group (Settings, Account).
Settings includes Flow Bubble Size and Flow Bubble Opacity controls. Tap Flow Bubble Size to open a sub-screen with a 4-step size slider (0.7×, 0.85×, 1.0×, 1.15×), a Reset button, and three toggles: Shrink the bubble when not in use (master), Shrink to a dot, and Shrink the bubble in search fields. The latter two are disabled until the master toggle is on. Tap Flow Bubble Opacity to access a 5-step opacity slider (20–100%, default 80%) with Reset. Under Data & Privacy, you'll find a Privacy Mode toggle for zero-data-retention dictation.
The Flow Bubble appears when you tap into most editable text fields. For privacy and security, it is automatically suppressed in password fields, number/phone inputs, and 100+ banking and financial apps.
Tip: Shake your phone to bring back the Flow Bubble if it ever becomes hidden.
Warning: Signing out deletes all transcripts stored on your device. You'll see a confirmation dialog before this happens.
Common issues
Flow Bubble not visible in notification reply boxes or browser address bars
The Flow Bubble was not visible when tapping into notification inline-reply boxes (such as WhatsApp quick-reply) or browser URL bars, making it impossible to dictate in those fields. This was fixed in version 1.9.0. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Tapping "re-grant permission" from Home screen error card didn't return to the app
When tapping a permission error card on the Home screen to re-grant the overlay or accessibility permission, Flow could fail to bring you back to the app after you updated the permission in Settings. This was fixed in version 1.9.0 — the app now reliably returns you to the foreground once the permission is granted. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
App stops working after being closed by the system, or asks for accessibility permission again
If your device closed Flow in the background, the app could stop working until manually restarted, and accessibility permission was not re-requested if it had been revoked. Detection of accessibility revokes and a re-prompt were added in version 1.8.2. Automatic recovery when the app is foregrounded after a force-stop or system kill was added in version 1.8.4. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Recording bubble clipped or cut off on screen
The recording bubble could appear partially cut off at the edge of the screen during dictation. This was fixed in version 1.8.4. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Onboarding buttons floating mid-screen on foldable or landscape devices
On foldable devices or in landscape orientation, the Next button and other action buttons during onboarding could appear in the middle of the screen rather than anchored to the bottom. Onboarding content also sometimes failed to scroll when it didn't fit on screen. This was fixed in version 1.8.4. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Per-app writing style not applying correctly
The per-category writing style (Personal, Work, Email, Other) could be ignored when dictating, and style changes might not take effect immediately after switching. This was fixed in a recent update — Flow now recognizes 140+ apps across Personal, Email, and Work categories (including Telegram, Signal, Discord, Yahoo Mail, ProtonMail, Zoom, Jira, Notion, WhatsApp, Slack, Gmail, Teams, Outlook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and many more, plus their browser versions), and applies the matching style right away. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Background shutdown on Samsung, Xiaomi, and similar phones
Aggressive battery management could shut down Flow while running in the background. This was fixed in version 1.6.2. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
If the issue persists after updating, go to Settings → Apps → Wispr Flow → Battery and select Unrestricted.
Hearing aid microphone not handled correctly on Android 16
Switching to a hearing aid microphone during dictation was not handled correctly on Android 16. This was fixed in version 1.6.2. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get the fix.
Bugs fixed in recent updates
The following issues have been fixed across recent versions. Update Wispr Flow from the Play Store to get all of these fixes:
Dictionary and Snippets empty state (1.8.4): After applying a filter or search query that returned no results, the Dictionary and Snippets screens could fail to show the empty state.
App crashes on Android 13 and later: The app could crash on devices running Android 13 or newer.
Feedback dialog issues: The feedback dialog could get stuck on a loading spinner if submission failed.
Crash on the "Which newsletter?" onboarding screen: The attribution screen could crash during onboarding.
Background service stops after a crash (1.5.2): Flow now restarts in the background automatically if stopped by a crash or low memory. Additional resilience was added in 1.6.2 and 1.7.0 for aggressive OEMs.
Flow Bubble disappearing after switching apps (1.6.2): The bubble could fail to reappear when navigating back to a text field after switching to another app.
Intermittent text insertion failures (1.6.2): Dictated text was not always reliably inserted into the active text field.
Crashes on Android 16 (1.6.2): Compatibility issues on Android 16 could trigger errors during dictation.
App stability and unexpected crashes (1.6.1): Stability issues that could cause the app to crash or behave unexpectedly were fixed.
Microphone staying on after stopping dictation (1.6.0): The microphone could remain active after the dictation bubble was hidden.
Crash when updating list content (1.6.0): The app could crash when list content (such as Dictionary or Snippets) was updated from multiple sources at the same time.
Crashes when navigating or following a link (1.6.0): The app could crash when tapping a deep link, signing in, signing out, or switching between screens quickly.
Required update screen skipped after signing in via a link (1.6.0): The screen now always appears when an update is required.
Duplicate text insertion in apps with slow text fields (1.5.2): Dictated text could be inserted more than once in apps that are slow to respond.
Accessibility service stops without restarting (1.5.2): The accessibility service now restarts automatically if it crashes or is stopped by the system.
Flow Bubble not appearing while the keyboard is opening (1.5.2): The bubble now appears sooner when a keyboard starts to open.
Flow Bubble stuck after dismissing the keyboard (1.5.2): The bubble could get stuck and stop responding after the keyboard was dismissed.
Duplicate entries in Dictionary, Snippets, and language selector (1.5.2): Items could appear multiple times in these lists, which could also cause crashes.
Snippets and Dictionary entries mixed up (1.5.2): Entries could get crossed with each other during sync.
Text insertion in apps using web-based text fields (1.5.0): Text insertion now works correctly in apps that use web-based text fields.
App slow to start or unresponsive after rebooting (1.5.0): Startup was improved to prevent the app from becoming unresponsive when the phone restarts.
Crashes during onboarding (1.4.1 and 1.2.1): A crash during onboarding was fixed in 1.4.1. An earlier crash on setup screens with scrollable content was fixed in 1.2.1.
FAQs
I can't find Wispr Flow in the Play Store
Wispr Flow has limited availability while in Beta. If you've joined the waitlist, you'll be notified once your spot is reached. If you still can't find the app after that, contact support.
Which sign-in method should I use?
Use the same sign-in method (Google, Apple, or Microsoft) you used when creating your Wispr Flow account on other devices. You cannot switch between login methods once your account is created. Enterprise users can also sign in with SSO by entering their work email address. Email aliases containing "+" are not supported.
What does Beta mean?
Wispr Flow on Android is currently in Beta — the app is fully functional, but new features are still rolling out.
Why doesn't the Flow Bubble appear right after finishing setup?
The Flow Bubble appears when you tap into an active text field in any app — it does not show on the Dashboard.
Can I change my language preferences after setup?
Yes. Tap the menu icon on the Dashboard to open the side drawer, then go to Settings → Languages. Tap Add more to enter edit mode, select additional languages, then tap Done to exit edit mode and Save to persist your selection. Exiting without tapping Save discards your changes.
What if I tap "Not now" on the accessibility permission?
Tapping Not now takes you back to the previous screen. You can grant the permission later through your device settings, but Flow requires it to insert dictated text into apps.
The Flow Bubble doesn't respond when I tap it
Close and reopen the app. Make sure the accessibility service is still enabled in your device's accessibility settings. If the issue persists, contact support.
Why doesn't the Flow Bubble appear in my banking app?
Flow automatically hides the Flow Bubble in banking and financial apps for security. There is no setting to enable it in those apps.
Is there a time limit on dictation sessions?
Dictation sessions are limited to just under 5 minutes, with a warning shortly before the limit. The session ends automatically when the limit is reached, and you can start a new one.
