Switch between the 123 and ABC layouts in the Wispr iOS keyboard

Available on: iOS

The Wispr keyboard opens in the numbers-first (123) layout by default. To type edits on a full QWERTY letter keyboard, turn on the ABC layout from the keyboard drawer or Flow Settings.

How to switch layouts

Either control changes the same setting.

From the keyboard drawer

  1. Open the keyboard drawer.

  2. Tap ABC in the drawer bar at the top of the keyboard. The button is filled when the ABC layout is active.

The ABC toggle appears only where it is available. If you don't see it, it isn't offered in that context.

From Flow Settings

  1. Open Flow Settings in the Wispr app.

  2. Turn the ABC keyboard layout on or off.

Note: A change made from the keyboard appears in Flow Settings the next time you bring the Wispr app to the foreground.

Keyboard controls and ABC typing behavior

Three controls are easy to confuse:

  • ABC toggle (drawer bar): enables or disables the Wispr QWERTY letter layout.

  • Bottom-left key (labeled 123 or ABC): switches between letters, numbers, and symbols; tap #+= for symbols. Typing a space or Return in numbers or symbols returns you to letters.

  • Globe key: unrelated to the ABC layout — a tap advances to the next installed keyboard, a long-press opens Apple's keyboard picker.

These typing behaviors apply only while the ABC letter layout is active:

  • Auto-capitalization: follows the host field's autocapitalization type, matching stock iOS behavior.

  • Shift and Caps Lock: one tap capitalizes the next letter; a quick double-tap activates Caps Lock, which releases when you leave the letter layer.

  • Autocorrect: on by default and user-toggleable. It skips single characters, words containing digits, acronyms, and words you have reverted. In English, it also fixes lowercase 'i' to 'I'.

  • Double-space for period: a quick double-tap on the space bar inserts a period, under strict conditions.

FAQs

Which layout should I use?

The 123 layout keeps numbers and punctuation ready for quick corrections after dictation. The ABC layout suits typing edits on a letter keyboard while staying inside Wispr.

Limitations and notes

  • The ABC keyboard layout and drawer toggle are available on iOS only.

  • The default layout is numbers-first (123); enable the ABC layout manually.

  • Your chosen layout persists across keyboard appearances once set.
