Teach Flow your words with the dictionary
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Available on: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android
Add misspelled names, technical terms, or jargon to your dictionary so Flow recognizes them. Add a correction to replace a wrong spelling that keeps appearing in finished dictation.
Add words to your dictionary
Note: On iOS, Dictionary unlocks after you dictate in another app and return to Flow. Any dictation that produces words counts; the onboarding card is optional.
Open Wispr Flow.
Select Dictionary in the left sidebar (Mac/Windows) or bottom bar (iOS/Android).
Select Add new (Mac/Windows) or + (iOS/Android).
Enter your word or phrase.
Select Add word (Mac/Windows), Save (iOS), or Add (Android).
Dictate a phrase containing the new word and check the result. If the same wrong spelling comes back, add a correction.
Platform | Length limit |
Mac and Windows | Input stops at 60 characters per word or correction field. |
iOS | 59 characters per field after surrounding spaces are trimmed. |
Android | 60 characters per word after surrounding spaces are trimmed. |
On mobile you can type past the limit, but the entry will not save. Empty or spaces-only entries are rejected everywhere; desktop also rejects words and misspellings made only of punctuation or symbols. Mac/Windows and iOS block duplicates within the dictionary you are adding to, so a personal and a shared copy of the same word can coexist. Android blocks duplicates that differ only in capitalization and blocks snippet triggers, except when you re-save an unchanged word or only change its capitalization.
If + is missing on Android
If no words are stored on the device and loading fails, + is hidden. Select Retry under “Something went wrong. Please try again.” A successful load restores +.
Words Flow learns on its own
When you correct dictated text, Flow can add the corrected word to your personal dictionary automatically. Edit or delete an auto-learned entry like any other.
Learned: Proper nouns, terms specific to your trade or profession (even lowercase), field-specific acronyms, uncommon or variant-spelled given names such as Geoff, Kathryn, or Bryan, foreign-language terms, and complete email addresses.
Skipped: File names and paths, web addresses and domains, partial email addresses, code symbols, keys, hashes, IDs, numbers, dates, markdown, emoji, everyday words, very common names such as John, Sarah, or Mike, globally famous names, and everyday acronyms such as PDF, CEO, or ASAP.
Where your dictionary applies
Your dictionary shapes dictated text and meeting-related text Flow generates for you, such as meeting titles, so a term is spelled the same way in a title as in the notes. Free-form and custom prompt requests run without your dictionary.
Fix persistent misspellings
Correct a misspelling appears only when adding a new entry on Mac/Windows and iOS. Android uses corrections that sync from those platforms but cannot create them; Android edits keep the replacement text.
Select Add new (Mac/Windows) or + (iOS) in Dictionary.
Enter the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation you want.
Turn on Correct a misspelling.
Enter the wrong spelling Flow produces. On iOS, switching the toggle moves your typed text between the fields instead of clearing it.
Select Add word (Mac/Windows) or Save (iOS), then dictate again to check the correction.
Each entry holds one correction; edit the entry to change it. Desktop checks for duplicates by misspelling. If Share with team is off when you select Add word, an existing personal word without a correction—including imported or auto-learned words—is upgraded to carry the new correction; team words are not. On iOS, a plain word cannot be upgraded this way, and either field is blocked if it matches another entry's word or correction in the dictionary you are saving to (the entry you are editing is exempt); invalid entries stay open with an error such as “Word already exists.” Personal and shared corrections can differ, and desktop prefers the personal entry when the saved words match exactly, including capitalization.
How desktop corrections are applied
Corrections match whole words regardless of capitalization, prefer the longer phrase when rules overlap, and keep the capitalization and punctuation you saved. Replacements are literal and not language-aware, so avoid mapping phrases you want left alone.
Mid-sentence continuations can lowercase the first character, except for recognized proper nouns. Surrounding text affects spacing and trailing punctuation, and messaging apps can remove trailing periods.
Contractions and possessives
Corrections leave “n't” contractions alone, so a rule like Don → Dawn fixes the standalone word but does not change don't, can't, won't, or isn't — including ALL-CAPS spellings and straight, curly, or other apostrophe styles.
Possessives are still corrected: with John → Bob, “John's car” becomes “Bob's car”. A correction whose misspelling is itself a contraction still applies, so don't → do not works as saved, and plurals such as “do's and don'ts” can still be changed by a matching correction.
Find, edit, or delete an entry
To check for a conflicting entry, use the magnifying-glass icon (Mac/Windows) or the top search bar (Android). Both match words and corrections regardless of capitalization and exclude snippets. Desktop searches only the tab you have selected, and Android does not show replacement text, so a match can look empty. iOS has no search — browse the list.
Edit an entry
Open the entry: hover and select the pencil icon (Mac/Windows), tap the entry (iOS), or swipe right (Android).
Change the spelling. Desktop's Edit word has one field; Edit replacement needs both Misspelling and Correct spelling.
Select Save changes (Mac/Windows) or Save (iOS/Android).
Editing updates the existing entry rather than creating a new one. Saving requires valid fields; an unchanged edit shows “No changes made,” and renaming an entry to duplicate another in the same dictionary is blocked.
Delete an entry
Warning: Deleting on desktop is permanent, and auto-learning will not re-add a deleted word. Add it again manually if you need it back.
Start the deletion: select the trash icon (Mac/Windows), swipe left and select Delete (iOS), or swipe left (Android).
Confirm with Yes, delete it (desktop, single entry) or Delete (iOS/Android).
To remove several desktop entries at once, select the rows and use the bulk Delete, then confirm Delete. Delete or Backspace alone does not remove entries; Cmd/Ctrl+Backspace works only with entries selected and no text field in focus.
Personal or shared words
Sharing requires active membership on an active team.
Mac/Windows eligibility: An active, trialing, or past-due organization subscription; or an organization without a subscription plus an active or past-due personal subscription or an unexpired personal trial. Team and Business qualify alike.
iOS eligibility: Organization membership plus an active or trialing Team or Business plan.
Desktop: Add to Shared with team and the entry is shared. Without team features, Add new there and the Share with team switch are unavailable.
iOS: Eligible accounts see All, Personal, and Team; others see a single list. In All, Share with team is offered only to organization members; entries added in Team are shared automatically.
Android: Organization members see All, Personal, and Shared with team filters; others see a single list. Android has no sharing option, so additions stay personal whichever filter you are viewing.
Important: Sharing on desktop moves an existing personal entry: Flow adds the team entry, then removes the personal copy. If either part fails, you see an error and keep the personal copy; a failed removal leaves both copies. A matching team word blocks sharing and keeps the personal copy — single-row sharing reports an error, and bulk sharing skips it.
Sync across devices
Words and corrections sync across devices signed in to the same account while you are online. Shared entries also require the team eligibility above.
Mac and Windows: Syncs when Flow opens and after each successful edit; no restart is needed. Use the toolbar refresh control to sync now.
iOS: Refreshes at sign-in and when Flow returns to the foreground.
Android: Refreshes at sign-in and each time you open Dictionary, which also updates the filters without a restart. If a refresh fails, previously loaded words stay available, including shared words.
Important: Signing out on iOS or Android, or switching accounts on Android, clears the dictionary stored on that device. It stays empty until it syncs successfully after you sign back in.
Still need help?
Contact support if a word is still misrecognized after you added it, a correction does not apply in new dictation, or saving keeps failing. Include your platform and device, the word, the text Flow produced, and what you already tried.
