Adapting to iOS 26.4
Last updated: July 4, 2026
Available on: iOS
If tapping Start Flow now drops you on a screen that says "Flow is on" and asks you to swipe back to your app, or your writing style no longer changes between apps — that's related to iOS 26.4. Here's what changed and how to use the new style controls we shipped.
What changed
Manual swipe back to your app: Tapping Start Flow used to briefly open the Flow app and return you automatically. After iOS 26.4, you may need to swipe back manually. When this happens, you'll see a screen titled "Flow is on" with the subtitle "You can start dictating now," and a prompt to swipe right across the bottom edge to continue. Voice-to-text works exactly as before once you're back in your app.
Styles no longer auto-adjust by app (for some users): For users in the new Styles Adaptation experience — a gradual rollout — Flow uses a single default style everywhere instead of choosing one per app. Users not yet in this rollout still have Flow auto-select a category (Personal, Work, Email, or Other) based on the active app.
Note: The swipe-back change is rolling out gradually and may not apply to all users yet.
What we shipped to help
One-time swipe-back alert: The first time you hit the manual swipe-back flow, you'll see an alert titled "A quick change for iOS 26.4+" explaining the new behavior. Tap OK to dismiss it — the alert won't appear again. This alert only appears on iOS 26.4 or later, and only when you encounter the manual swipe-back screen.
Default style settings in the app: The Style tab lets you set a default style per category (Personal, Work, Email, and Other) so your formatting stays consistent across apps. A simplified single-default-style view ("Your default sound") is part of a gradual rollout — when you have it, you'll see this simplified view instead of the category picker. The Style tab requires English (US or British) as your selected language.
Quick Style Switcher on the keyboard: A new style pill appears above the keyboard. Tap it to temporarily switch your style for the current conversation without leaving your app. The override stays active until you change it or clear it.
Keyboard touch accuracy improvements: Taps in the gaps between keys now register the nearest key correctly, the boundaries between shift/Z and M/delete are more evenly split, and dragging from one key to another inserts only the new key's character.
Setting your default style
Open the Wispr Flow app and tap the Style tab.
Set a style for each category:
Personal: Formal, Casual, or Very Casual.
Work, Email, and Other: Formal, Casual, or Excited.
Note: The Style tab is only visible to users whose language is set to US English or British English, and styles apply in English only. Under auto-detect, device regions GB, CA, AU, and NZ all map to British English and qualify. If you have the simplified "Your default sound" view, you'll see a single default style picker instead of the category view above.
Using the Quick Style Switcher
Find the style pill in the trailing area of the keyboard top bar when you're ready to dictate inside another app. It shows your currently active writing style. The style pill does not appear alongside the Start Flow button — the two are mutually exclusive.
Tap the style pill to open the style picker. You can also long-press the pill and, while holding, drag to a style to select it without a second tap.
Select the style you want for this conversation. Available styles depend on the active category: Personal offers Formal, Casual, or Very Casual; Work, Email, and Other offer Formal, Casual, or Excited. If you're in the simplified "Your default sound" rollout, all four styles (Formal, Casual, Very Casual, Excited) are selectable from a single list. The style applies immediately.
Important: While dictation is in progress, the style pill is dimmed and cannot be tapped. Wait for transcription to finish before switching styles.
Note: If you have a word selected, an Add to Dictionary button appears where the style pill normally is. After you add the word, a brief "Word Saved" confirmation appears before the style pill returns.
Common issues
Bugs fixed in recent updates
Several issues related to the iOS 26.4 changes have been resolved. To get the fixes, update Wispr Flow to the latest version from the App Store.
Flow returned to the wrong app after dictation: In some cases, after finishing dictation and swiping back, Wispr Flow could return you to the wrong app instead of the one you were typing in. Switchback reliability has been improved so Flow correctly returns you to the app you were using.
Keyboard appeared unresponsive after swiping back on first launch: When Wispr Flow wasn't already running, tapping Start Flow and then swiping back could leave the keyboard showing the mic button with no waveform, and tapping the mic did nothing even though dictation had started. The keyboard now correctly shows the waveform and responds to taps after swiping back.
Flow's keyboard appeared stuck or reverted to the system keyboard: In some apps, the Wispr Flow keyboard could close unexpectedly on iOS 26.4, causing iOS to fall back to the system keyboard. The keyboard now stays responsive across apps on iOS 26.4.
Start Flow didn't begin dictation after swiping back: When the Wispr Flow app wasn't already running, tapping Start Flow from the keyboard and then swiping back could fail to start dictation. This is now fixed.
Taps near certain keys registered the wrong key: Taps in the gaps between keys — especially near shift/Z, M/delete, between rows, or on the numbers and symbols keyboards — could miss or hit the wrong key. A related issue where double-tapping shift for caps lock caused gap taps to stop working has also been resolved.
Dragging between keys inserted extra characters: When pressing a key and dragging to a different key, the dragged-to key didn't highlight, and sometimes both characters were inserted. Dragging now inserts only the new key's character.
FAQs
Why do I have to swipe back to my app after tapping Start Flow?
iOS 26.4 changed how apps switch between each other, which affected Flow's automatic return behavior. Follow the on-screen prompt to swipe right across the bottom edge to return to your app. Dictation works exactly the same once you're back.
Why did I see a pop-up about swiping back to my app?
That's a one-time alert explaining the new iOS 26.4 swipe-back behavior. Tap OK to dismiss it — it appears only once.
Why is my writing style the same in every app now?
If you're in the new Styles Adaptation rollout, Flow uses a single default style everywhere rather than choosing one per app. Set your preferred style in the Style tab, or use the Quick Style Switcher on the keyboard to change your style on the fly.
How long does the Quick Style Switcher override last, and does it change my saved styles?
The override stays active until you select a different style or clear it, and it persists if you dismiss and reopen the keyboard. It's a temporary override only — your saved styles for Personal, Work, Email, and Other are not affected.
Are Mac, Windows, and Android affected?
No. Mac, Windows, and Android are unaffected by this iOS change and work the same as before.
I don't see the style pill or the Style tab
Styles require US English or British English as your selected language. If you use auto-detect, device regions GB, CA, AU, and NZ all resolve to British English and qualify. The Style tab is part of a gradual rollout — make sure you're on the latest version of Wispr Flow from the App Store. The style pill additionally requires setup to be complete.
Limitations and notes
Styles apply in English only (US English or British English; under auto-detect, GB, CA, AU, and NZ device regions map to British English).
The Quick Style Switcher, the simplified single-default-style view, and the iOS 26.4 swipe-back screen are rolling out gradually and may not be available to all users yet.
Wispr Flow can automatically return you to your previous app for certain known apps — this is being rolled out gradually and is currently off for most users. Otherwise, the manual swipe is required by iOS 26.4.
