Why the orange dot or mic indicator stays on after dictating (iOS)

Last updated: July 17, 2026

Available on: iOS

If you see the orange dot in your status bar, a mic icon, or a Dynamic Island timer that stays on after you finish dictating — this guide explains what those indicators mean and how to clear them. Most cases resolve in under a minute.

Quick checks

  • Did the session actually end? Tap the stop button on the Flow Keyboard, the Dynamic Island, or the Action Button to make sure the dictation closed.

  • Is it the orange dot or the Dynamic Island? The orange dot means the mic is in use right now. The Dynamic Island pill is a separate UI that can linger even after the mic is released.

  • Does the indicator clear after a few seconds? If yes, no action is needed. If it stays on, continue below.

What these indicators mean

  • Orange mic dot: Tied to the iOS audio session. It clears immediately when Flow stops recording.

  • Dynamic Island / Live Activity pill: A separate UI that can persist across a keyboard session. It is dismissed when Flow ends the activity.

  • Microphone status: Flow fully releases the microphone after each dictation. A stuck indicator is a UI issue, not an ongoing recording.

How to clear a stuck indicator

  1. End the current session from the Flow Keyboard, the Dynamic Island stop button, or the Action Button. The indicator should disappear within a second or two.

  2. Toggle Live Activities off and back on in Settings → Wispr Flow → Live Activities. Then start and stop a short dictation to confirm the pill dismisses cleanly.

  3. Force-quit and relaunch Flow if the orange dot persists. Swipe up from the bottom, swipe Flow off the top of the screen, then reopen it.

  4. Adjust the Disable Flow Session setting in Settings → Disable Flow Session. This controls how long a backgrounded idle session stays open before auto-stopping. Options: Immediately, 5 minutes (default), 15 minutes, 1 hour, or Never. It does not interrupt an active dictation.

Note: If you often see the pill hanging around after you're done, try setting Disable Flow Session to Immediately or 5 minutes.

FAQs

Is Flow still recording when I see the orange dot after dictating?

No. Flow releases the microphone at the end of every dictation. A lingering indicator is a UI state that hasn't cleared, not an active recording.

Why does the Dynamic Island pill stay visible between dictations?

The Live Activity is designed to persist across a keyboard session so you can start another dictation quickly. It dismisses when Flow ends the session or when the Disable Flow Session timer expires.

What does Disable Flow Session actually control?

It sets how long a backgrounded, idle Flow session stays open before it auto-stops. It has no effect on an active dictation.

Still stuck?

  • The orange dot stays on even after force-quitting Flow.

  • The Dynamic Island pill won't dismiss after toggling Live Activities and restarting the app.

  • You're seeing this on every dictation, not just occasionally.
