Why the orange dot or mic indicator stays on after dictating (iOS)

Last updated: August 21, 2026

Available on: iOS

If the orange dot in your status bar, a mic icon, or a Dynamic Island pill stays on after you finish dictating, here's what those indicators mean and how to clear them. Most cases resolve in under a minute.

Quick checks

  • Did the session actually end? Stop dictation from the Flow Keyboard, the Dynamic Island stop button, the Action Button, the iOS Control Center toggle (iOS 18+), or a Siri Shortcut ("turn on/off Flow").

  • Orange dot or Dynamic Island? The orange dot means the mic is in use right now; the Dynamic Island pill is separate UI that can linger after the mic is released.

  • Does the indicator clear after a few seconds? If yes, you're done. If it stays on, continue below.

How to clear a stuck indicator

  1. End the session from the Flow Keyboard, the Dynamic Island stop button, the Action Button, the iOS Control Center toggle (iOS 18+), or a Siri Shortcut. iOS controls the dismissal timing, so the indicator clears shortly after.

  2. Toggle Live Activities off and back on in iOS Settings → Wispr Flow → Live Activities, then run a short dictation to confirm the pill dismisses. Flow can deep-link you to this page.

  3. Force-quit and relaunch Flow if the orange dot persists: swipe up from the bottom, swipe Flow off the top of the screen, then reopen it. Dictation runs in the main Flow app even when started from the keyboard, so this clears the indicator.

  4. Adjust Settings → Disable Flow Session, which sets how long a backgrounded idle session stays open before auto-stopping: Never, 60 minutes, 15 minutes, 5 minutes (default), or stop on app close. It never interrupts an active dictation.

Tip: If the pill often lingers, set Disable Flow Session to 5 minutes or "stop on app close".

Note: With Live Activities turned off for Flow in iOS Settings, the Dynamic Island pill never appears. Starting a dictation immediately after stopping one can briefly delay the pill, since Flow waits for the previous Live Activity to end.

FAQs

Is Flow still recording when I see the orange dot after dictating?

No. Flow releases the microphone at the end of every dictation. A lingering indicator is UI state that hasn't cleared, not an active recording.

Why does the Dynamic Island pill stay visible between dictations?

The Live Activity persists across a keyboard session so you can start another dictation quickly. It dismisses when Flow ends the session or when the Disable Flow Session timer expires.

Why did my dictation end on its own without pasting?

Flow sends a local notification explaining why — an interruption, a duration limit being reached, or a failure with the recorded duration. Check your notifications to diagnose sessions that end on their own.

  • The Dynamic Island pill won't dismiss after toggling Live Activities and restarting the app.

  • You see this on every dictation, not just occasionally.
