Why the orange dot or mic indicator stays on after dictating (iOS)

An orange dot, mic icon, or Dynamic Island pill can stay on after you finish speaking. Check whether Flow is still using the microphone, end the session without discarding your dictation, and clear a leftover indicator.

Quick checks

  • Orange or green? Orange means an app is using the microphone without the camera; green means camera use. Control Center's recent-use message does not mean an app is recording now.

  • Still processing? Flow releases the microphone when recording stops, but stopping during transcription can leave it in use until processing finishes.

  • Check Flow's Control Center toggle. “recording” with a stop icon means a session is active — end it below. “idle” means Flow no longer considers a session active, even if an indicator remains.

While the Action Button “hold to stop” hint and elapsed timer are showing, the Dynamic Island has no tappable stop button. If the indicator clears within a few seconds, you're done; if it stays on, continue below.

Clear a stuck indicator

  1. Tap the mic or stop control again if Flow closed mid-dictation. This clears a stale recording state; tap the mic once more to run a clean dictation, then stop it using a control above.

  2. Open Flow. Launching or relaunching Flow clears leftover Live Activities. If the pill remains, continue.

  3. Toggle Live Activities off and back on in iOS Settings → Wispr Flow → Live Activities, then run a short dictation to confirm the pill dismisses.

  4. Force-quit and relaunch Flow if the orange dot persists:

    1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

    2. Swipe Flow off the top of the screen.

    3. Reopen Flow.

    Dictation runs in the main Flow app even when started from the keyboard, so this clears the indicator. Closing Flow normally also clears the keyboard's recording state; a swipe-away force-quit does not guarantee that cleanup. If the orange dot remains, contact support below.

Note: The keyboard returns to idle on its own if Flow does not confirm a dictation. This clears stale recording indications across the Control Center toggle, Action Button, Shortcuts, and app views without reinstalling or restarting; another mic tap checks Flow again.

Check background auto-stop

Auto-stop applies only to an open, idle session while Flow is in the background and the Flow Keyboard is inactive. Opening Flow, activating its keyboard, or starting dictation cancels the countdown; auto-stop never interrupts active dictation.

  1. Open Flow's Settings → General → Disable Flow after (“Decide when Flow turns off”).

  2. Choose an option below. This setting is device-specific, so set it on each iPhone.

The same setting controls resuming after an audio interruption: Never always resumes, a timed option resumes only if the interruption lasted no longer than that duration, and Immediately does not resume.

If dictation ends on its own

A single iOS dictation has a five-minute limit; Flow then stops dictation and processes what it captured. Phone calls and audio-device changes, such as unplugging or switching headsets, can also stop recording and release the microphone. Without microphone access, dictation cannot start.

Warning: If iOS reports low memory, Flow cancels dictation or processing, discards the captured audio, and returns its indicators to idle.

Recover text that didn't paste

Flow sends an immediate notification with a distinct alert sound only when notification permission is already granted and the Flow Keyboard is inactive; Flow does not request permission then. Command-mode queries are excluded because they perform actions rather than save transcripts.

The time-limit notification appears only when the limit ends dictation automatically, not when you stop it yourself at that moment; the transcript is saved to history either way and pastes only when the keyboard is active. Failure notifications appear once per dictation, only for retryable failures or network errors — not silent, empty, or cancelled dictations. Without a positive recorded duration, the title is “Your dictation is saved” and the action remains “Tap to retry”.

Live Activity behavior

  • Separate from the orange dot: the Dynamic Island pill can remain after the microphone is released. Flow starts one Live Activity per recording session, and it persists across a keyboard session so you can start another dictation quickly.

  • Idle state: the pill can show idle (“Wispr Flow / on”) even without active dictation. An audio interruption also leaves it idle, and the pill ends if the session does not resume.

  • Dismissal: the pill dismisses when Flow ends the session, including when background auto-stop expires.

  • Missing pill: with Live Activities turned off for Flow in iOS Settings, the pill never appears. Starting dictation immediately after stopping can delay the next pill, and a pill that fails to start can stay absent until a later app launch.
