Adapting to iOS 26.4
Last updated: May 11, 2026
Available on: iOS
iOS 26.4 changed how third-party keyboards work, which affects how Flow activates and how writing styles are applied. Here's what changed, what we shipped to help, and how to set up your new style controls.
What changed
Manual swipe back to your app: Tapping Start Flow used to briefly open the Flow app and return you automatically. After iOS 26.4, you may need to swipe back manually. When this happens, you'll see a screen titled "Swipe back to your app" explaining that Apple now requires it to activate the microphone. Voice-to-text works exactly as before once you're back.
Styles no longer auto-adjust by app: Flow no longer automatically adjusts formatting based on which app you're typing in. Your default style now applies everywhere unless you override it.
Note: The swipe-back change is rolling out gradually and may not yet apply to all users.
What we shipped to help
One-time swipe-back alert: The first time you encounter the manual swipe-back flow, you'll see an alert titled "A quick change for iOS 26.4+" explaining the new behavior. Tap OK to dismiss it — the alert won't appear again.
Default style settings in the app: The Style tab now lets you set a default style per category (Personal, Work, Email, and Other) so your formatting stays consistent across apps.
Quick Style Switcher on the keyboard: A new style pill appears above the keyboard. Tap it to temporarily switch your style for the current conversation without leaving your app. The override stays active until you change it or clear it.
Keyboard touch accuracy improvements: Taps in the gaps between keys now register the nearest key correctly, the boundaries between shift/Z and M/delete are more evenly split, and dragging from one key to another inserts only the new key's character.
Note: Styles are available when your language is set to US or British English. If you use auto-detect, styles work when any of your device's preferred languages is an English variant (US, British, Canadian, Australian, or New Zealand).
Setting your default style
Open the Wispr Flow app and tap the Style tab.
Set a style for each category:
Personal: Formal, Casual, or Very Casual.
Work, Email, and Other: Formal, Casual, or Excited.
Note: The Style tab is only visible to users with an English language setting. A simplified single-default-style view is currently rolling out and isn't yet available to everyone.
Using the Quick Style Switcher
Find the style pill next to the Start Flow button on the keyboard. It shows your currently active writing style.
Tap the style pill to open the style picker.
Select the style you want for this conversation. The picker shows Formal, Casual, Very Casual, and Excited. The style applies immediately.
Note: The override remains active until you change or clear it, and it persists across keyboard dismiss and reopen. Your saved default styles are not affected.
Important: While dictation is in progress, the style pill is dimmed and cannot be tapped. If the style picker is open when dictation begins, it closes automatically. Wait for transcription to finish before switching styles.
If you have a word selected, an Add to Dictionary button appears where the style pill normally is. After adding the word, a brief "Word Saved" confirmation appears for about two seconds before the style pill returns.
FAQs
Why do I have to swipe back to my app after tapping Start Flow?
iOS 26.4 changed how apps switch between each other, which affected Flow's automatic return behavior. Swipe right on the bottom bar to return to your app. Dictation works exactly the same once you're back.
Why did I see a pop-up about swiping back to my app?
That's a one-time alert explaining the new iOS 26.4 swipe-back behavior. Tap OK to dismiss it — it appears only once.
Why is my writing style the same in every app now?
Flow no longer automatically adjusts formatting per app due to iOS 26.4 changes. Set your preferred style in the Style tab, or use the Quick Style Switcher on the keyboard to change your style on the fly.
How long does the Quick Style Switcher override last?
The override stays active until you select a different style or clear it. It persists if you dismiss and reopen the keyboard.
Does the Quick Style Switcher change my saved styles?
No. The Quick Style Switcher is a temporary override for the current session. Your saved styles for Personal, Work, Email, and Other remain untouched.
Are Mac, Windows, and Android affected?
No. Mac, Windows, and Android are unaffected by this iOS change and work the same as before.
I don't see the style pill or the Style tab
Styles require US or British English as a selected language. If you use auto-detect, the feature works when any of your device's preferred languages is US, British, Canadian, Australian, or New Zealand English. The Style tab is also part of a gradual rollout — make sure you're running the latest version of Wispr Flow from the App Store.
Limitations and notes
Styles apply in English only (US, British, Canadian, Australian, or New Zealand).
The Quick Style Switcher, the simplified single-default-style view, and the iOS 26.4 swipe-back screen are rolling out gradually and may not be available to all users yet.
The swipe-back behavior is an iOS 26.4 platform change and cannot be overridden by Wispr Flow.
Common issues
Bugs fixed in recent updates
Several issues related to the iOS 26.4 changes have been resolved. To get the fixes, update Wispr Flow to the latest version from the App Store.
Start Flow didn't begin dictation after swiping back: When the Wispr Flow app wasn't already running, tapping Start Flow from the keyboard and then swiping back could fail to start dictation. Caused by a launch timing issue.
Taps near certain keys registered the wrong key: Taps in the gaps between keys — especially near shift/Z, M/delete, between rows, or on the numbers and symbols keyboards — could miss or hit the wrong key. A related issue where double-tapping shift for caps lock caused gap taps to stop working has also been resolved.
Dragging between keys inserted extra characters: When pressing a key and dragging to a different key, the dragged-to key didn't highlight, and sometimes both characters were inserted.
Writing style wasn't applied correctly from the picker: Some styles weren't applied as intended — for example, "Very Casual" wasn't treated as a personal tone, and "Formal" wasn't applied to email formatting.
Keyboard style selection overwrote saved styles: Selecting a style override from the keyboard could overwrite your saved styles for Personal, Work, Email, and Other. The Quick Style Switcher now applies only as a temporary override.
