Why Wispr Flow Sometimes Removes or Changes Words on Android (Smart Formatting)

If Flow on Android drops a leading "so," removes deliberate repetition or rewrites a phrase, Smart Formatting can be involved. Check the changes below, then report an example if the result changes your meaning.

What's happening

Smart Formatting adds punctuation, balances sentences and removes fillers such as "um," false starts and repetitions unless they add clear meaning. Flow can misinterpret meaningful words as filler or redundancy, removing a leading "so," deliberate repetition or emphasis.

• Punctuation: "Period", "comma" and "question mark" become symbols unless clearly used as content, as in "remove the comma"; ambiguous uses favor symbols. Similar-sounding words, such as "Kama," can also become punctuation.

• Trailing period: In Slack, Messages and other messaging apps, your writing style decides whether the final period is kept: Formal keeps it, Casual drops it on dictations up to about ten sentences, and Very casual effectively always drops it. With no style set, it is dropped only on one- or two-sentence messages.

• Numbers: Spoken numbers become digits with standardized units, currency, times, degrees and percentages — "four four five cleaners" becomes "445 cleaners," "1000 dollars" becomes "$1,000," and "one two five degrees" means "125°," not a range or decimal.

• Structure: Flow creates implied lists and removes spoken markers such as "first" and "finally," adds paragraph breaks at topic changes, splits long passages and formats email greetings without a comma before the addressee.

• Wording: Flow expands contractions such as "gonna" to "going to," favors one-word compounds, avoids em-dashes unless dictated and converts dictated emoji descriptions into emoji.

• Spelling: Dictated spellings replace earlier words only when they sound similar; a very different-sounding correction is ignored.

What you can do

Rephrase to avoid punctuation command words. Personal and team Dictionary words and replacements, Snippets and app-category writing styles also change wording independently of Smart Formatting; styles apply once personalization setup is complete and your styles have loaded.

Flow uses your selected languages for every Android dictation, and formatting is intended to preserve the language you spoke.

1. Open Settings → Languages.

2. Select at least one language you dictate in.

3. Tap Save.

4. Dictate the affected phrase again. If it preserves your meaning, you're done; otherwise, report the example below.

Report an example

Transcripts are stored locally per device and do not sync, so report from the device where the issue happened. Reporting uploads the selected transcript to Wispr if needed; your report includes your description, account email, transcription status, original, formatted and pasted text, device and software details, time zone and dictation languages. The recording is attached only if it remains on your device.

1. Find the affected transcript on Home, including failed or empty dictations, which show an error such as "Transcription failed" or "Text insertion failed" with Report but no Copy.

2. Tap Report to open "Report transcription".

3. Enter what you said, what Flow wrote and the expected wording in "Describe what you expected instead." Send requires a description.

4. Tap Send. Leaving the screen does not cancel submission, and outcomes appear wherever you are in Flow.

5. Confirm it sent: "Your transcription report was sent." appears, the draft clears and the report screen closes. If the screen stays open, the report was not sent.
