Fix text not pasting after dictation
Last updated: September 19, 2026
Available on: Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.
If Flow captured your words but they did not reach the text field, recover the transcript before dictating again. Then check the field, app, and permissions.
Recover the text first
| Platform | Paste last transcript | Copy without pasting |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Cmd+Ctrl+V, or the menu-bar action | Cmd+Ctrl+C |
| Windows | Shift+Alt+Z, or the system-tray action | Shift+Alt+X |
| iPhone | Open Flow History and copy the transcript, then paste in your app | Copy the successful History entry |
| Android | Use the bubble's Paste action when offered | Use its copy button, then long-press the field and choose Paste |
Use your configured shortcut if you changed a desktop default. A notice reading Click a textbox and use [shortcut] to paste calls for that shortcut; do not assume the notice itself copied text to your clipboard. Explicitly use Copy last transcript before normal Cmd+V/Ctrl+V if needed.
If History shows a failed transcription rather than your words, use Retry failed transcriptions. Dictation history belongs to the device where you recorded it and does not sync to your other devices.
Check the target field
- Click or tap inside an editable text field and look for the cursor.
- Dictate a short phrase. Keep that field focused until processing and insertion finish.
- Test in Notes on Mac/iPhone, Notepad on Windows, or a notes app on Android.
- If the test works, restart the target app and test there again. If every app fails, check Flow's permissions and restart Flow.
Desktop Flow temporarily uses the clipboard. It can restore supported previous clipboard contents after a successful paste; a failed insertion may leave transcript text there. Check the result before relying on either clipboard state.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and enable Wispr Flow. If already enabled, toggle it off and on again.
- Quit and reopen the target app, then click directly inside its text field.
- Restart Flow and test again. See Quit and relaunch Flow if closing its window did not quit the app.
Use the copy-then-paste workaround above to preserve the result while troubleshooting. Clipboard restrictions in remote or managed apps may require a different approach.
Windows
- Test Paste last transcript in Notepad.
- Check the target app's paste command. Some terminals or IDEs use Ctrl+Shift+V or right-click paste rather than Ctrl+V.
- If another app intercepts your Flow shortcut, change it in Settings → General → Shortcuts. See shortcut settings.
- Update Flow, then quit it from the system tray and reopen it.
iPhone
- Use the globe key to select the Flow Keyboard.
- Enable Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Flow → Allow Full Access and grant microphone access. Full Access changes take effect without relaunching.
- Keep the keyboard visible until the text arrives. If it does not insert, check History in the main Flow app.
- Test in Notes. If an app or corporate policy blocks third-party keyboards, dictate in a supported app and copy/paste the result.
Specialized fields, including email addresses and numeric inputs, can switch to your previous keyboard. Some apps also require you to switch back manually. Use iPhone keyboard setup for missing-keyboard problems.
If text lands in the wrong place on iPhone, use Undo: shake the phone, press Cmd+Z on an external keyboard, or choose Edit → Undo.
Android
The Flow Bubble needs a focused text field and the on-screen keyboard. If absent, check whether it is snoozed and follow any overlay or Accessibility repair prompt. See Android setup.
- Failed to paste: tap Paste or paste from the clipboard. Tapping the Wispr icon dismisses the error without clearing that text.
- Failed to transcribe: Retry resends saved audio after you reconnect. Tapping the Wispr icon starts a fresh dictation instead.
- Taking longer than usual: wait for processing; do not treat it as a paste failure yet.
Place the cursor at the end of an existing draft. In some apps, dictating at its beginning or middle can replace existing text. Sensitive fields and recognized banking or financial apps can hide the bubble. Other unsupported fields may need manual paste.
Remote desktops and continued failures
Run Flow on your local computer and enable permitted clipboard sharing in the remote client. On a Mac host, a stray character may require copying the transcript and using the guest's native paste shortcut. Follow remote desktop instructions.
Contact support if text still fails in every test app or Paste last transcript also fails. Include your platform, target apps, whether History contains the words, and which manual paste or permission checks worked.
