Use Notetaker with multiple languages

Last updated: September 10, 2026

Available on: Mac (macOS 13 or later)

Notetaker transcribes meetings in 21 languages and detects the spoken language automatically, so there is nothing to select before a call.

Note: Your dictation language selections do not apply to meetings. For dictation, see Use Flow with multiple languages.

How it works in Flow

Language detection

  • Detection is automatic: Notetaker identifies the spoken language from the meeting audio; there is no language picker for meetings.

  • Dictation settings do not apply: the languages in Settings → General → Languages govern dictation only, so adding or removing one does not change how Notetaker transcribes a meeting.

The non-English meeting notice

Once 20 or more non-English words are transcribed in a meeting, Notetaker shows a "This meeting doesn't sound like English" notice. Choose Continue anyway to keep recording; recording, notes, and summaries are never blocked.

  • It fires for any non-English speech, including supported languages, so seeing it does not mean your language is unsupported.

  • It appears once per meeting and does not clear if speech returns to English.

  • Your microphone and the meeting's audio count separately, so either side of the conversation can trigger it.

Summaries and speaker labels

  • Summary language follows the audio: the TL;DR, key points, next steps, decisions, and action items are written in the language predominantly spoken. Your notes and calendar event details do not override it.

  • Some elements stay in English: top-level section titles ("Flow Summary", "Action Items") and speaker labels.

  • Very short or silent meetings receive an English placeholder summary.

FAQs

Where do I set the language for a meeting?

You don't. Notetaker detects the spoken language automatically from the meeting audio.

I added a language to my dictation settings but my meeting transcript didn't change

That's expected. Dictation language selections apply to dictation only; Notetaker detects meeting languages separately.

I saw "This meeting doesn't sound like English" on a supported language

That's expected, and your meeting still records and transcribes normally. See The non-English meeting notice above.

My meeting summary is in an unexpected language

A different language dominated the audio, for example a long introduction in another language. Only spoken audio determines the summary language.

Limitations and notes

  • The 21 supported languages apply to meeting transcription; Flow Summaries and speaker names are not covered by that list.

  • Meetings in other languages still record and are still transcribed, but transcripts may contain more errors.

  • There is no way to pin or override the language for a meeting.

  • Notetaker is available on Mac (macOS 13 or later).

  • Regenerating the summary of a previously summarized non-English meeting may briefly show a duplicate localized item alongside its English original. This resolves on its own.

Still need help?

Reach out to support if a meeting in a supported language transcribes into a different language, or produces a transcript with widespread errors.

In the Flow desktop app, click the ? icon, then select Talk to support. Include the meeting language and a short example of what was said versus what Notetaker transcribed.
