Ask Wispr: chat with your meetings and notes

Last updated: August 6, 2026

Available on: Mac. Notetaker is rolling out gradually.

Ask plain-language questions about your meetings, notes, calendar events, and past dictations, and get an answer in seconds — "What did we decide about the budget?" or "What did Maria commit to?"

What it is

Ask Wispr is a chat bar in the main column of the Notetaker hub. It appears once you have your first note — connecting a calendar alone isn't enough. Type a question and Flow answers from the content you already have in Wispr Flow.

Note: Ask Wispr answers in its own chat view and never modifies your notes. To edit notes by chat, use the Chat tab inside a meeting.

How it works in Flow

Asking questions

  • Full-page chat: press Enter to open the chat view. Shift+Enter adds a new line, Cmd+K focuses or unfocuses the composer, and Cmd+[ returns to the hub. When the composer is empty and unfocused, it cycles through suggested prompts — "Summarize my week of meetings so far," "What are my action items this week?," "Who am I waiting to hear back from?," "What decisions did we make this week?," "What questions were left unanswered in my last meeting?," and "How should I prepare for my next meeting?" — which hide when you start typing.

  • Answers: responses stream in word-by-word with lists, block quotes, and action-item breakdowns, typically 250 words or fewer. They lead with the relevant information, cite specific things people said or decided, and say plainly when something isn't covered.

  • Keyword searches: a short phrase ("recent ML interview," "Q3 budget review") or a pasted meeting fragment returns matching meetings as clickable in-app links. Fully-formed questions get prose answers with citations.

  • Date and time awareness: Ask Wispr knows your current date, time, and timezone, so "What other meetings do I have today?," "this week," "yesterday," "from yesterday's standup," and "last week" resolve correctly.

  • Your content first: answers draw on meeting titles, notes (including the Flow Summary), transcripts, calendar events, past dictations, and connected apps. Single-meeting questions read the full transcript for quote-level answers ("What did Alex say about the launch date in Monday's sync?"); broad "what meetings did I have" questions scan meeting notes to stay fast.

  • Named speakers: where you've assigned names, answers use them — "Maria agreed to send the proposal" instead of "Speaker 1."

  • Follow-ups keep context: ask "Who owns the marketing deliverable?" then "What was their deadline?" without repeating yourself.

  • Independent chat sessions: multiple chats run at once. Stop cancels only the chat you're viewing, and progress updates ("Searching…", "Reading N meetings") never appear in another chat.

Hub chat tools

The hub chat uses three tools automatically:

  • Calculator: exact arithmetic — "What's the total headcount across all three teams?"

  • Date math: shifts dates and counts days between them — "How many days until the project deadline?" or "What week does the next quarter start?"

  • Web search: weather, places, businesses, and current facts. It doesn't know your location, so provide it when asked — "What's the weather like?" If search is temporarily unavailable, the chat continues and tells you.

Citations and links

When an answer draws on a specific source, a citation pill at the end of the sentence shows the source type — Slack, Gmail, Calendar, Notion, Web, or Meeting. Hover for the specific channel, email, event, or meeting name. Each source is cited at most once per answer.

  • Meeting pills: show the meeting title (or "Meeting" if untitled) wrapped in full, with a participant photo, note icon, or colored initial. Clickable pills show an "opens externally" arrow on hover and open that meeting's detail view.

  • Slack, Gmail, and Calendar pills: open the cited message, email, or event in the respective app. A source without a link gets no pill — it appears as plain prose.

  • Links in answers: meeting links and external URLs render inline within the sentence, show site icons, and open in your default browser.

Chat history

Past conversations sit in a rail on the left of the chat view, grouped under date labels. A New chat button sits in the same row as the back button at the top of the rail. Already-loaded conversations open instantly; unloaded ones show a brief loading state. Scroll up and tap Load older messages to see earlier turns.

The chat inside a meeting

  • Where to find it: each meeting has its own Chat tab in the meeting drawer, plus the chat and Ask Anything inputs in the hub note's bottom bar. It's scoped to that meeting — transcript, current notes, and earlier turns — and opens at your latest messages.

  • Questions answer in the chat bubble: "What's he saying?" or "What was just decided?" never overwrite your notes; the Extract to-dos chip also always replies in chat.

  • It edits notes when you ask: be explicit — "Add action items to my notes," "Update my notes with the budget decision," "Add a to-do list at the end of my notes." Flow rewrites or makes targeted edits, saves automatically, and confirms "Updated meeting notes." The Thoughts tab shows the full result.

  • "What did I miss?" catch-up: while a meeting is recording, the What did I miss? chip returns a chat-bubble recap of roughly the last two minutes, focused on what others said — your own mic lines are labeled "You:" in conferencing meetings, and in-person meetings label each speaker individually. If nothing meaningful was said, it replies "Nothing new since you last looked." The chip greys out while another reply is in progress, the drawer expands to a comfortable reading height (never shrinking one you've made taller), and the chat stays pinned to the bottom as the answer streams.

  • Closing the drawer: click anywhere outside to close it (clicks inside keep it open); it reopens at its previous height. Esc once clears focus, a second Esc closes the drawer.

Note: While the Ask Anything drawer is open during a recording, it covers the recording-consent disclosure at the bottom of the notepad. The consent line appears once you close the drawer.

Tip: Connect Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, and Notion in Settings → Connectors to enrich answers — the page shows your progress and what each adds.

FAQs

Ask Wispr vs. transcript search — which should I use?

Use Ask Wispr for plain-language questions that may span multiple meetings, notes, calendar events, or dictations. Use transcript search (the search icon, or Cmd+F, in a meeting's Transcript tab) when you know the exact word or phrase and want to jump to it.

Will asking a question in the in-meeting chat change my notes?

Only if you explicitly ask for an edit — for example, "Update my notes with the action items." Questions are answered in chat; edit requests rewrite the notes or make targeted changes.

Can the in-meeting chat create standalone documents like a PRD or follow-up email?

No. It answers questions, rewrites your notes, or makes targeted edits, but doesn't generate standalone artifact documents. For a deliverable like a follow-up email or brief, ask Flow to draft it directly in your notes.

What if Flow can't find an answer?

Flow says so directly in the chat view. Broaden your question or add a time reference such as "last week." Keyword searches with no match prompt you to clarify. If a request fails, the chat shows a specific error — for example, "Could not get a response. Try again." — so you can retry.

Can Ask Wispr search the web?

Yes — the hub chat searches for weather, places, businesses, and current facts, and asks for your location when a question requires it. The in-meeting chat is scoped to that meeting's content.

How does "What did I miss?" work during a meeting?

The chip appears in the in-meeting chat composer while recording and returns a chat-bubble recap of roughly the last two minutes. See The chat inside a meeting above for drawer height, streaming, and greyed-out behavior.

Does the Stop button cancel all my open chats at once?

No. Stop cancels only the request in the chat you're viewing; other sessions continue. A new question in the same chat replaces only that chat's pending request.

Limitations and notes

  • The Ask Wispr bar appears only in the Notetaker hub, not when viewing a past meeting.

  • The calculator, date math, and web search tools are hub-chat only.

  • Complex questions spanning many long meetings can take up to about a minute; Ask Wispr retries automatically before reporting a failure.

  • The What did I miss? chip works only while a meeting is actively recording; its drawer expansion is temporary and resets to your saved height when you reopen the notepad or restart.

  • Speaker name assignment requires speaker identification; assigned names update live across the transcript, summary, and answers. Deleting a meeting or your account deletes its speaker-identification data.

  • The Gmail connector is temporarily unavailable while Wispr Flow completes a Google review — you can't connect Gmail, and Ask Wispr can't reference Gmail messages until it's back (already-connected users can still disconnect).

  • Follow-up context is scoped to the current conversation; starting a new conversation clears it.

  • The drawer closes automatically when a meeting summary or transcript begins generating; reopen it once generation completes.

  • The animated "thinking" loader respects your OS reduced-motion setting; first-time tips in My notes are English-only.

  • The recording-consent disclosure also doesn't appear for recordings started with "Open notepad automatically" off if the notepad is never opened.
