Free tier weekly word cap and bonus words

Available on: iOS (Flow Keyboard). The desktop Basic plan lists 2,000 words/week as plan text only.

On the Basic plan, the iOS Flow Keyboard limits how many words you can dictate each week. Here's how the cap works, what you see as you approach it, and how to get a trial or upgrade.

Note: New eligible desktop signups are offered a Pro trial by default; a limited group receives a weekly word cap instead. Referral, promo code, student, team, or enterprise signups may receive a different trial or plan.

How it works in Flow

Overview

Flow counts dictated words in a rolling weekly window. iOS counts mobile words separately from desktop, and unused words do not carry over.

Key behaviors

  • Weekly caps (iOS keyboard): Basic accounts get a 1,000-word soft cap and a 1,500-word hard cap per week.

  • Soft cap: At 1,000 words, an in-keyboard card shows "X of Y words used this week" with an upgrade CTA.

  • Hard cap: At 1,500 words, a blocking card prevents new dictations.

  • Where your balance lives: The iOS account menu shows a live "You've used X of Y words this week" bar; it is hidden for paid subscribers and replaced by "X of Y days used in trial" during a Pro trial.

  • Plans screen: Caps appear only as static bullets ("1,000 words per week on iOS", "2,000 words per week on desktop"), not as a live counter.

What happens when your trial ends

The trial-start screen states in advance: "After your Flow Pro trial, you'll move into Flow Basic with a 1,000-word limit per week." When the trial ends, you see a Trial Ended screen with an Upgrade CTA and a decline path back to Basic, and Basic limits apply immediately.

Students are routed to a "claim student plan" screen instead of the standard paywall. Prices are fetched live, and iOS also offers weekly plans.

Manage and cancel actions differ by billing platform: web subscribers are directed to the desktop app; App Store subscribers see Cancel/Resubscribe options in the iOS Manage Subscriptions sheet.

FAQs

Why don't I have a Pro trial like other users I've seen?

Most new eligible desktop signups get a Pro trial, as do users arriving through a referral, promo code, student status, or a team or enterprise account. A limited group receives the weekly word cap instead.

Can I still get a Pro trial?

Yes. A referral link, a valid promo code applied during signup, a student plan, or team or enterprise membership all route you away from the weekly-cap group. You can also upgrade at any time from Settings → Plans and Billing.

I already had a Pro trial — did I lose it?

No. If your trial was already running and you don't meet the free-tier eligibility criteria — for example, you came in via a referral or had already dictated words — it continues to its original end date.

What happens if I rejoin a team that doesn't have billing set up?

Team or enterprise membership routes you away from the weekly-cap group. Contact your team admin for billing details.

Can I upgrade to remove the weekly cap?

Yes. Go to Settings → Plans and Billing and upgrade. Paid plans remove the weekly word limit.

Limitations and notes

  • The enforced 1,000/1,500-word cap applies to the iOS Flow Keyboard on Basic accounts. The desktop Basic card's "2,000 words per week" is plan text, not an enforced cap.

  • iOS and desktop treat subscription status differently: iOS treats past-due and paused subscriptions as premium while desktop does not, so the same account can be unlimited on iOS but capped on desktop.

  • Whether you receive a Pro trial instead of the cap depends on your account's existing subscription data — referral, student, promo or admin overrides, prior trials, team or enterprise membership.

  • Command Mode is a Pro/Team feature listed as "Command mode for editing (desktop only)". On iOS, Command Mode text editing currently fails; URL and search commands still work.
