Free tier weekly word cap and bonus words

New Wispr Flow accounts on Mac and Windows start on the free tier: 2,000 dictated words per week. The first time you reach that limit, Flow adds 8,000 bonus words so you can keep dictating, raising that week's cap to 10,000.

Note: Most new desktop signups start on the free tier. Users who sign up through a referral link, use a promo code, have student status, or belong to a team or enterprise account may receive a Pro trial instead.

How it works in Flow

Overview

Flow counts your dictated words in a weekly window that resets every Sunday. Your remaining words update in real time in the sidebar upgrade card (when visible), the account menu, and Settings → Plans and Billing.

Key behaviors

  • Default cap: 2,000 dictated words per week on the free tier.

  • Soft cap: Reaching 2,000 words triggers a notification stating that Flow will be slower.

  • First-week bonus: The first time you reach 2,000 words, Flow automatically adds 8,000 bonus words, raising your cap to 10,000 until the next Sunday reset. After that, the standard 2,000-word weekly cap returns.

  • Bonus notification: When the bonus is applied, you'll see: "You've hit your 2,000 word weekly limit — Here's 8,000 bonus words to keep going this week!" with a "Keep dictating" button and an "Upgrade" option. The bonus is already active; "Keep dictating" just dismisses the notification.

  • Hard cap: Blocks new dictations until the weekly reset — 10,000 words during your bonus week, 5,000 words in the weeks after.

  • Sidebar reminder during a bonus: While your bonus week is active, the sidebar notes that the higher cap applies to this week only and offers an upgrade for unlimited dictation.

  • Onboarding view: The free-tier onboarding view is replaced by the standard usage view once you hit 2,000 words, your first hit is recorded, or 7 days pass since onboarding — whichever comes first. This change is one-way and permanent.

FAQs

Why don't I have a Pro trial like other users I've seen?

Most new desktop signups start on the free tier with a weekly word cap rather than a time-limited Pro trial. Pro trials go to users who come in through a referral, promo code, student status, or a team or enterprise account — see "Can I still get a Pro trial?" below.

Can I still get a Pro trial?

Yes, through any of these routes:

  • Referral link: Referred users receive a 30-day Pro trial.

  • Promo code: Applying a valid promo code during signup grants a Pro trial.

  • Student plans: Students follow the student plan path rather than the free tier.

  • Team or enterprise: Joining an enterprise that already has a billing plan grants a 14-day team trial; other team and enterprise members are covered by their team's plan.

You can also upgrade to a paid plan at any time from Settings → Plans and Billing.

I already had a Pro trial — did I lose it?

No. If your trial was already running and you don't meet the free-tier eligibility criteria (for example, you came in via a referral or had already dictated words), your trial continues to its original end date unchanged.

What happens if I rejoin a team that doesn't have billing set up?

If you've already used a team trial and rejoin a team without a payment method, you get a 24-hour grace period for a team admin to add one before you become billable. If the enterprise has disabled team trials, joiners become immediately billable.

Do I get the 8,000 bonus words every week?

No. The bonus is a one-time grant for the first week you reach the 2,000-word limit. After that week ends, your cap returns to 2,000 words.

Can I upgrade to remove the weekly cap?

Yes. Go to Settings → Plans and Billing and upgrade to a paid plan. Paid plans remove the weekly word limit.

Limitations and notes

  • The free tier and bonus week are available on Mac and Windows only. The 8,000-word bonus is granted once — the first time you reach the 2,000-word limit.

  • iOS uses separate, lower word limits (1,000 soft cap / 1,500 hard cap), tracks mobile words independently from desktop, and does not include the 8,000-word bonus. iOS warnings start at 800 words and repeat every 100 words after.

  • Android does not include the 8,000-word bonus.

  • The weekly cap resets every Sunday. Unused words do not carry over.

  • Whether you receive a Pro trial instead of the free-tier cap is determined at sign-in. Students, referred users, users with a promo code, team and enterprise members, and users with a support- or admin-granted trial are not placed on the free-tier cap.

  • Joining an enterprise that already has billing grants a 14-day team trial. Enterprises that have disabled team trials are exempt — joiners become immediately billable.

  • Accounts with a Pro trial already in progress that don't meet free-tier eligibility keep that trial until its original end date.
