What is Flow?

Flow lets you dictate anywhere you can type — about 4x faster than typing. Speak naturally and Flow transcribes what you said, runs AI commands to edit your text, and learns your vocabulary over time.

What it is

Flow is a voice dictation app that works in any text field on your computer or phone. Hit your hotkey, speak naturally, and Flow types out what you said as soon as you finish. It learns your vocabulary over time and can run AI commands like "make this more professional" or "summarize this."

When to use it

Use Flow when you want to:

  • Draft emails, messages, or documents faster than you can type

  • Edit or reshape text with spoken AI commands (e.g., "make this more concise")

  • Capture quick notes hands-free on your phone

  • Dictate technical terms, names, or jargon that other dictation tools mistranscribe

How it works

Overview

Flow runs in the background. Press and hold the hotkey to dictate; release to stop and paste. Double-tap the hotkey to enter hands-free mode, where dictation continues until you press the key again.

Key behaviors

  • Fast transcription: When you release the hotkey, Flow pastes the transcribed text into your active app.

  • AI commands: Say instructions like "make this more professional" or "summarize this" and Flow edits your text accordingly.

  • Vocabulary adaptation: Flow learns your words, names, and technical terms over time for more accurate transcription.

Platform-specific features

Desktop (Mac & Windows)

  • The Hub: Your home base for dictation stats, history, dictionary, snippets, and notes.

  • Dictation stats: Track words dictated, words per minute, and your streak from a card on the right side of the Hub home page. Word counts are compared to familiar reference points like thank-you notes, news articles, and short film scripts.

  • Personalized welcome: The Hub home page adapts to you — new users see a get-started message with the dictation shortcut, and returning users see a welcome-back message. A banner at the top suggests what to try next based on where you are in setup.

iOS

  • Notes: Dictate and save notes directly in the Flow app. Notes are grouped by day and support pull-to-refresh. Swipe a note for Copy, Share, and Delete actions, or long-press to see a Markdown preview. Each note includes a one-tap AI summary.

  • Quick access: Open Notes from a lock screen widget, Control Center button, or Siri shortcut. Notes are also searchable via Spotlight. Available Siri shortcuts include "Create note with Flow," "Save Flow note," "Dictate a Flow note," "Quick dictate with Flow," "Turn on/off Flow," and "Open Flow notes."

  • Widgets: Four widgets are available — a Live Activity widget, a Control Center widget that toggles Flow recording on and off, a Notes lock screen widget, and a Notes Control Center widget that opens Flow Notes.

Android (Beta)

  • Personalization Styles: Flow adjusts the tone of your dictation based on which app you're typing in. Set a style for Personal, Work, Email, and Other app categories. Personal defaults to Casual and supports Formal, Casual, and Very Casual. Work, Email, and Other default to Formal and support Formal, Casual, and Excited. Personalization Styles are currently optimized for English.

  • Snippets: Create, search, and filter text expansion shortcuts from a dedicated screen. Snippets sync across your devices and expand by voice during dictation.

  • Copy to clipboard: After a successful dictation, a copy-to-clipboard button briefly appears next to the Flow Bubble.

  • Flow Bubble appearance: Customize size and opacity from Settings. Opacity has five stops (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%) and size has four stops (70%, 85%, 100%, 115%). The default size is 85% and the default opacity is 80%. Tap Reset to restore the default.

Create an account

Sign in with Google, Apple, or Microsoft, with enterprise SSO, or with an email and password. The available sign-in options depend on your platform:

  • Desktop (Mac & Windows): Click Sign in via browser to open the Wispr Flow login page in your browser, then choose a provider.

  • iOS: Google and Apple buttons are shown by default. Tap More Options to reveal Microsoft, SSO, and Email sign-in.

  • Android: Google, Apple, Microsoft, SSO, and Email are all shown as separate buttons.

To create an email-and-password account on mobile:

  1. Enter your email address, full name, and a password. Passwords must be at least 6 characters. On Android, the form also includes a Confirm Password field, passwords must be between 6 and 72 characters, and your password cannot match your full name.

  2. Complete the CAPTCHA verification if prompted (iOS only).

  3. Click the verification link sent to your inbox. Check Spam or Trash if you don't see it. On iOS, the app signs you in automatically once you click the link.

  4. Start using Flow once verified.

Important: If your organization uses SSO, you must sign in through SSO — email/password sign-in is not available. If your organization uses directory sync, contact your IT admin to get access; directory-managed organizations cannot self-signup.

Note: If you forget your password, reset it via email. On iOS and Android, if you enter an email during sign-in that is already linked to a Google, Apple, or Microsoft account, Flow prompts you to sign in with that provider instead. Email aliases with "+" (for example, user+alias@example.com) are not supported — use your original email address.

Dictating a message in any text field

You do: Place your cursor in a Slack message, press the hotkey, and say "Hey team, the design review is moved to 3pm tomorrow."

Flow types: Hey team, the design review is moved to 3pm tomorrow.

Using an AI command to edit text

You say: "Make this more professional."

Flow rewrites: The selected text is rephrased in a more polished, professional tone.

FAQs

What's the default hotkey to start dictating?

On Mac, press the fn key. On Windows, press Ctrl + Win. These shortcuts are push-to-talk — press and hold to dictate, release to stop. Double-tap the same key to enter hands-free mode (fn+Space on Mac, Ctrl+Win+Space on Windows). All shortcuts are customizable in Settings.

Does Flow show my words on screen while I'm talking?

No. Flow captures your audio while you hold the hotkey, then transcribes it and pastes the finished text once you release. You won't see words appear live as you speak, which is what lets Flow clean up filler words, punctuation, and self-corrections using the full context of what you said.

Can I use Flow offline?

No. Flow requires an internet connection for voice transcription.

Is enterprise SSO supported?

Yes. Enter your work email address during sign-in and Flow identifies your organization's identity provider automatically.

Do Personalization Styles and Snippets sync across devices?

Snippets sync to your account on iOS, Android, and Desktop. On Android, your snippets can also be expanded by voice during dictation. Personalization Styles on Android sync to your account. On desktop, style preferences are configured on the Style page under Personalization in the Hub.

How do I access Notes on iPhone?

Open Notes directly in the Flow app, tap the lock screen or Control Center widget, or use Siri shortcuts like "Create note with Flow" or "Save Flow note." Notes are also searchable from the iOS search screen.

Why doesn't the Flow Bubble appear when I tap a text field on Android?

The Flow Bubble appears when the on-screen keyboard is open. If you're using an external keyboard or the software keyboard is collapsed, bring up the on-screen keyboard first. The bubble is hidden in password fields and numeric/phone inputs, with two exceptions: it does appear in browser URL bars and in system notification inline reply boxes. For privacy and security, the bubble is also hidden in a range of banking and financial apps.

Can I change how the Flow Bubble looks on Android?

Yes. Adjust size and opacity from the Settings screen. Opacity has five stops (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%) and size has four stops (70%, 85%, 100%, 115%). The default size is 85% and the default opacity is 80%. Tap Reset on either screen to restore that screen's default. The Bubble Size screen also includes toggles for "Shrink the bubble when not in use," "Shrink to a dot," and "Shrink the bubble in search fields." The last two are disabled unless the master "Shrink the bubble when not in use" toggle is on.

When does my streak reset?

Streaks are computed using your local timezone and advance when you dictate on consecutive calendar days (or weeks). A streak may briefly appear unchanged on desktop until your device syncs.

Where did my dictation stats go in the Hub?

Your stats — words dictated, words per minute, and streak — moved from the header bar to a card on the right side of the Hub home page. They're still visible every time you open the Hub.

Limitations and notes

  • Mac: Apple Silicon and Intel supported. macOS 12.0 (Monterey) or newer required.

  • Windows: Windows 10 (64-bit) or later required.

  • iPhone: iOS 18.3 or later required. Notes, lock screen widget, Control Center widget, Siri shortcuts, and Spotlight search are available.

  • Android (Beta): Snippets (including voice-triggered expansion during dictation), Dictionary, Personalization Styles, Language Selection, and Flow Bubble appearance customization are available. Personalization Styles are currently optimized for English. The Flow Bubble appears only when the on-screen keyboard is open, with exceptions for browser URL bars and system notification inline reply boxes; it is hidden in password fields, numeric/phone inputs, and a range of banking and financial apps. Some features have limited functionality compared to desktop and iOS.

  • iOS statistics: WPM, days used, and total words require at least 500 total dictated words to unlock.

  • Transcription history (iOS): Cloud Sync (on by default) and Privacy Mode are separate toggles. To keep data on-device only, turn off Cloud Sync — you'll see a confirmation alert. Enabling Privacy Mode alone does not stop server sync while Cloud Sync is on. Auto-delete transcripts removes older transcripts on each app launch but does not prevent them from being uploaded. Transcripts do not currently sync between iOS and desktop.

  • Privacy Mode: On iOS, Privacy Mode and Cloud Sync are distinct controls — Privacy Mode governs AI training and data use, while Cloud Sync governs server storage and cross-device sync. For HIPAA-BAA-signed users, Privacy Mode is permanently locked ON and Cloud Sync is locked OFF. Privacy Mode can also be admin-locked on by an enterprise organization. On Android, Data & Privacy controls (Privacy Mode and Private Cloud Sync) are being rolled out and may not yet be available to all users.
